2004 Barbecue for the Birds

Saturday, October 9, 2004

The 22nd Annual Friends of FACT Open House and Barbecue for the Birds was an afternoon of enlightenment and entertainment for approximately 100 people along with the 35 wonderful volunteers that graciously served the appreciative crowd.

Beginning at 2pm on Saturday, October 9th, volunteers led guided tours of the facility, special Kit Fox walks, and opportunities to see and touch both adult and baby birds of prey, such as Barn Owls, American Kestrels, Red-tailed Hawks, and a Golden Eagle.

"Rare & Endangered" a wonderful Kern County folk music band heralded our guests to dinner: a genuine western deep pit barbecue with beef, turkey, beans, salsa, bread and salad, coffee or iced tea, followed by homemade desserts like your mother used to make.

The band played country, folk, and pop songs during dessert. The winners of the silent auction bids were announced and the lucky ones claimed the fantastic deals - quality merchandise, handy services, and original art work donated by local businesses and artists.

This year's auction with an astounding array of goods and services that FACT supporters contributed to the cause raised about $1600 for the new cages. Our goal is $20,000 total. We still need to raise about $15,000. The amount raised at this years BBQ for the Birds was great. Considering the low number in attendance this was a fantastic amount of money raised.

Thank you to all of our volunteers, CSU Bakersfield, 60+ Alumni Club, and to all of you who helped make our annual Barbecue for the Birds such a great success. See you next year!

DIRECTIONS: FACT is located in the Environmental Studies Area on the south east side of the CSUB campus. To get to FACT enter the CSU Bakersfield campus from the south entrance off of Camino Media Blvd.   Just after the information booth the large parking lot on the right is the access road to the facility. Turn right in the first driveway.  Go through the parking lot past the recycling drop off area, at the softball field backdrop find a short dirt road and follow it over the campus bike path (yield to traffic on the bike path) to the Environmental Studies Area/FACT parking area. The parking area is lined with railroad ties, please park straight in toward the fence or railroad ties.
