A Message to BTSA Coordinators
Dear BTSA Director:
CSU Bakersfield's School of Education and Extended University are pleased to inform you that we are partnering to offer innovative academic programs that fully integrate California's BTSA process. We ask you to share the following information with your first and second year teachers:
- Beginning teachers participating in your BTSA/CFASST program can earn up to eight quarter-units of graduate credit for reflective activities addressing completed CFASST events and professional goals established in Individual Induction Plans. These units will be posted at the contract credit rate of $45 per quarter unit. Up to four units can be earned for the first year of BTSA and up to four units for the second year. Teachers in the second year may post units for both the first and second years if they complete all course requirements. The units are posted under the course title Teachers as Reflective Practitioners.
- The eight units of credit for Teachers as Reflective Practitioners can be applied toward the Field-Based emphasis of CSUB's Online Master of Arts in Education, Curriculum and Instruction. The online degree program can be completed without traveling to Bakersfield. In the Field-Based emphasis, the elective requirement for the Master's degree is met with a series of courses that parallel BTSA and the California Formative Assessment and Support System for Teachers. In addition to the contract credit units earned for Teachers as Reflective Practitioners, the field-based option includes courses in action research, field-based research, standards-based learning and teaching, curriculum evaluation and performance-based assessment, teaching diverse students, and instructional leadership. The 45 quarter-unit degree program (equivalent to 30 semester units) is rounded out with five core courses and a culminating activity. We invite your BTSA program to cooperate with CSUB in providing teachers with the opportunity to earn up to eight quarter-units in reflective activities that are transferable into our online, field-based Master of Arts degree.
