Program Background

In an effort to support our nation’s commitment to providing the opportunity for education to all Americans, Congress established a series of programs designed to help students overcome class, social, and cultural barriers to higher education. These programs are funded under title IV of the Higher Education Act if 1965 and are known as the TRIO Programs. Educational Talent Search is a TRIO Program

ETS Achievers

Promotion of academic achievement and a sense of belonging to a family are factors that distinguish the Educational Talent Search Project from many other programs. Recognizing that standards of excellence and high levels of motivation within a supportive environment all have an influential effect on student persistence, one of the major goals of this project is to motivate our participants to strive for academic as well aspersonal achievement.

The California State University, Bakersfield Educational Talent Search program provides fundamental support to 1000 youths (6th - 12th graders) annually. Participants must meet the eligibility criteria in that two thirds of the 1000 are low-income and potential first generation college students. The CSUB Educational Talent Search is a federally funded program designed to assist low-income, first generation students with secondary school, retention, graduation, re-entry and college placement. Students are provided with academic advising, tutoring, online financial aid and college application workshops, and career advising. Eligible students can receive assistance with study skills, time management, goal setting and self-esteem development. The Educational Talent Search Program reflects the concern that without early intervention, most disadvantaged students would be deprived of pursuing postsecondary education.
