Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
My name is Jesse Quintanilla, the Director of the Educational Talent Search Program at California State University, Bakersfield. My staff and I are excited to begin another productive academic year. We will continue to provide academic and career advising and assistance in completing the financial aid and admissions applications. I strongly believe that working as a collective unit plays an important role in determining the overall success of the ETS program. The main goal of the program is to help our ETS Achievers apply to the California State University system, University of California system, Community Colleges, Armed Services, and vocational institutions. My desire for the staff is to become more involved by attending the weekly or biweekly meetings, and by staying informed of any changes in the matriculation process into post-secondary education. This, in turn, will increase our knowledge about financial aid, California grants, and scholarship information.
As the ETS Director, I feel that it is important that our CSUB ETS program has clear and precise objectives and that the ETS personnel relentlessly strive for success in every aspect of student services. I admire my staff for their skills and perspectives, but mostly for the heart and passion that they have for the students. For the 2005-2006 school year, I am proud to report that 85% of our ETS program students completed their application paperwork and received federal assistance. Two thirds of the 1000 students were low-income and potential first generation college students, and approximately 90% applied to post-secondary education as well. Our yearly performance report clearly indicated that our ETS participants qualified for some type of financial aid; so, applying for financial aid is the key to qualify for federal assistance. Increasing the graduation, financial aid, admissions, and enrollment rates are our main concerns for the 2006-2007 school year as well as for the future. Last year, our Educational Advisors, paraprofessionals, and our program secretary worked intensely and collectively to meet the financial aid and admissions deadlines as well as our newly mandated objectives. We continue to be committed to offer the same quality services for each and every ETS participant.
Educational Talent Search is designed to provide a support system for our students! The CSUB ETS program helps its participants identify their career interests and sort through the colleges and programs that will best meet their needs. The staff is aware that the funding sources are provided by the Department of Education, and the program can only be refunded if the required goals and objectives are fulfilled. On that note, I am also excited to report that our grant proposal was renewed an additional four years. Therefore, we will continue to have the privilege of offering these essential services to the programs participants.
I would like to thank the ETS staff for making this possible and for
their support during the grant writing period. We are in the process of
planning a comprehensive curriculum, as well as monthly workshops to accomplish
our program objectives. In order to complete our yearly endeavors, our
principle goals are to help our participants' transition from either junior
high school to high school or from high school to post-secondary education.
Thank you for your cooperation and let's get ready to have another dynamic
school year!
With much appreciation,
Jesse Quintanilla, M.Ed - Director
