English Major with Credential Emphasis (EMCE) Program

(2011-2013 Catalog)

The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing has authorized CSUB to offer a single-subject preparation program in English for students who wish to teach in California secondary schools.

EMCE Program Core Curriculum

To prepare prospective teachers according to the state-adopted English Language Arts Content Standards for California Public Schools and the Reading/Language Arts Framework for California Public Schools, EMCE Candidates must take all of the following required courses:

Lower Division Requirements

1. English 110 – Writing and Research (5 units) (Satisfies A2 requirement)
2. Communications 108 – Strategies of Public Speaking (5 units) (Satisfies A1 requirement)
3. English 207 – Ethnic-Minority American Literature (5 units) (Satisfies C4 requirement)
4. English 201 – The English Major with Credential Emphasis (1 unit)

Upper Division Requirements

5. English 301 – Teaching High School English Language Arts (5)
6. English 300 – Critical Approaches to Literature (5)
7. English 311 – Writing Literary Analysis (5)
8. English 335 – Shakespeare I (5) or English 336 – Shakespeare II (5)
9. English 315 – English Literature Survey I (British Early) (5)
10. English 316 – English Literature Survey II (British Later) (5 units)
11. English 383 – American Literature Survey I (American Early) (5 units)
12. English 384 – American Literature Survey II (American Later) (5 units)
13. Language:
      (a) English/Linguistics 414 – History of the Language (5 units) or
           English/Linguistics 415 – General Linguistics (5 units)
      (b) English/Linguistics 418 – Second Language Acquisition (5 units)
14. Adolescent Literature: English 472 – The Young Adult Novel (5 units)
15. English 393 – World Mythology (5 units)
16. World Literature (Choose one):
       English 397 – Selected Readings in Western and Non-Western Literature I (5 units) or
       English 398 – Selected Readings in Western and Non-Western Literature II (5 units)
17. Literature of Diversity: English 366 – Studies in Race, Gender, and Ethnicity (5 units)
18. English 404 – Creative Writing (5 units)
19. Journalism: Communications 414 – Newspaper Production (2 units)
20. Theatre 402 – Technical Theatre Production Laboratory (1 unit)
21. ENGL 491 – Senior  Seminar for Prospective Teachers (4)  
 

EMCE Program Extended Studies Curriculum (Optional)

To further prepare prospective teachers in the range of subjects required to teach English Language Arts in California, EMCE candidates may also take the following optional courses from any of the following categories:

22. Literature of Diversity: English 364 – Studies in Fiction: The African-American Experience, or English 365 – Literature of Slavery, or English 367 – Queer Literature, or English 370 – Literature by Women of Color, or English 372 – Studies in Chicano Literature, or English 373 – Women in Literature and Film, or English 374 – Gender in Literature and Film, or English 385 – Literature of the American South, or English 386 – Literature of the American West.
 

23. World Literature and Mythology: English 375 – Studies in a Major Author or Group, or English 392 – International Folk Narrative, or English 395 – Writing Nature: Literature and the Environment, or English 397 – Selected Readings in Western and Non-Western Literature I, or English 398 – Selected Readings in Western and Non-Western Literature II, or English 469 – Modern African Literature, or Humanities 479 – Literature and the Other Arts.
 

24. Genre: English 391 – Bible as Literature, or English 460 – History of Film, or English 475 – Studies in Fiction, or English 476 – Poetry, or English 478 – Drama.

 EMCE Program Theatre and Journalism Specializations (Optional)

The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) also allows EMCE candidates to develop optional specializations, in conjunction with the appropriate department, in Theatre and/or Journalism by meeting the following requirements:

Theatre Specialization (Optional) (25 units)

1. Acting: Theatre 311 – Movement I, or Theatre 321 – Voice and Diction I, or Theatre 421 – Scene Study.
2. Technical Theatre/Design: Theatre 351 – Lighting Design, or Theatre 352 – Scenic Design, or Theatre 353 – Costume Design.
3. Directing: Theatre 361 – Directing I.
4. Theatre as Literature: Theatre 371 – Theatre History I, or Theatre 372 – Theatre History II, or Theatre 379 – The American Theatre, or Theatre 381 – Women Playwrights, or Theatre 385 – Modern Drama (5 Units)
5. Theatre as Production (choose five units from):
Theatre 201 – Rehearsal and Performance, Theatre 202 – Technical Theatre Production Laboratory, Theatre 203 – Run of the Show, Theatre 401 – Rehearsal and Performance, Theatre 402 – Technical Theatre Production Laboratory, Theatre 403 – Run of the Show.

 Journalism Specialization (Optional) (26 units)

 Choose five courses from:

1. Communications 306 – News Writing and Reporting
2. Communications 312 – Graphic Communication for Print Media
3. Communications 414 – Newspaper Production (2 Units)
4. Choose two:
Communications 311 – Feature Writing, Communications 314 – Photojournalism, Communications 404 – Public Affairs Reporting.
