The CSUB English Major at Antelope Valley Campus

Since Fall l999, the CSUB Department of English has offered the English Teacher Preparation Program (ETPP) at the Antelope Valley Campus in Lancaster, California.

Fifteen courses are required. Students seeking the B.A. in English will complete only ten courses, including Senior Seminar. An English minor (consisting of any four courses other than English 305 and English 410) is also available.

Courses will be delivered by two-way instructional television, by on-line instruction, by CSUB professors at AVC, and by professors hired by CSUB to teach in the AVC program. For various reasons such as professors going on leave, the order of courses in the schedule below may change. Note: classes meet one night a week for eleven weeks. We are going to try to offer our on-site classes on Tuesdays or Thursdays.

Prerequisite courses: The Antelope Valley College equivalents of prerequisites for CSUB upper-division English courses are English 1B and one from the following: English 220, 221, 222, 225, 226, 227, 2230, 231, 250.

Our Mission Statement

The mission of the B.A. in English program is five-fold: (1) to help students understand and appreciate a diverse range of literary texts in their cultural, historical, and aesthetic contexts; (2) to develop through courses in literature, writing, and language an understanding of universal human issues; (3) to introduce some of the principal critical and scholarly approaches to the study of literature; (4) to promote the ability and the life-long desire to read perceptively, think critically, and write effectively; (4) for ETPP students, to understand the structure of the English language and the principles of Second Language Acquisition.

The CSUB Portfolio Requirement

In order to assess how effectively we are carrying out our Mission Statement, the Department of English asks that each student assemble a portfolio, a collection of materials that includes papers and examinations, as well as a personal statement indicating what the student has learned from each course. The portfolio is required for English 490: Senior Seminar, and will be graded by a committee of English faculty. It will count as part of the English 490 grade. And, accompanied by a resume, your portfolio will be a valuable aid in locating a satisfying job.
Note: a new course, English 311 (Writing Literary Analysis) has replaced the other upper-division composition courses in the core requirements. It will be offered Winter, 2002. English 300 is a co-requisite. It too is offered in the Winter 2001 term. If you have not taken upper-division composition (310), then take 311 in Winter 2001 and take 300 with it if you have not had 300.
