What is the Early Start Program?

Early Start is a program that requires incoming students who do not demonstrate readiness for college-level math and/or English to begin remediation during the summer before coming to the CSU.


Who has to take the Early Start Program?

All students who have not demonstrated college readiness in mathematics are required to participate in the Early Start Program (ELM score less than 50). All students who have not demonstrated college readiness in English are required to participate in the Early Start Program (EPT score less than 138).


How can students be exempt from Early Start?

Designated exams and criteria can exempt students from Early Start, please see Exemptions tab. International Students, Out of State Students, and students participating in the CSUB Summer Bridge or College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) are exempt from Early Start.


Who is eligible for the Early Start Program?

Only first-time incoming freshmen are eligible to enroll in the Early Start Program.


Is the program mandatory?

Yes, to all students who have not demonstrated college readiness in English and/or mathematics. Failure to enroll in the required Early Start course(s) may result in cancellation or non-enrollment for fall quarter.


How do students enroll for the program at CSUB?

Students attending CSUB in the Fall
Early Start registration is a two-step process. Students first have to login to their MyCSUB account to access the Early Start Smart Page and select the campus where they plan to complete Early Start. Once students complete step one it will take approximately 24 hours for the system to generate the Enroll in Early Start link. During the second step the students register for the early start sessions, including dates and times.

Students attending a different CSU in the Fall
Once you login to your campus student portal, the CSUB EIP office will receive a direct communication confirming your selection. You will be contacted within 5 days to complete your registration, including dates and times. If you are not contacted within five days, please contact the EIP office directly at 661-654-2193.

What if students attending CSUB in the Fall select a different CSU Campus to complete Early Start?

Students can verify if courses offered at other CSU’s satisfy the Early Start requirement and/or possible completion of remediation by going to the link below. The column titled Outcome indicates ES if the course satisfies the Early Start requirement and EPT/ELM if the course provides students with the opportunity to move up or complete remediation. Once the student makes a selection, the selected CSU will contact them directly to complete their registration.

What are the dates and times for Early Start English sessions offered at CSUB?

Students attending CSUB in the Fall
The Early Start English program is a two week program, four days a week for four hours a day. All sessions are offered in the morning 8:00am-12:00pm and afternoon 12:30pm-4:30pm. ESE sessions are offered every 2 weeks during the summer beginning June 22nd and ending August 13th.

Students attending a different CSU in the Fall
The Early Start English program is a two week program, four days a week for four hours a day. Two Early Start English sessions are available: June 22nd-July 2nd 8:00am-12:00pm and July 6th-July 16th 12:30pm-4:30pm.

Students attending CSUB in the Fall
The Early Start Mathematics program is a two week program, four days a week for four hours a day or a four week program, four days a week for four hours a day based on ELM scores. All sessions are offered in the morning 8:00am-12:00pm and afternoon 12:30pm-4:30pm. Two week ESM sessions are offered every two weeks beginning June 22nd and ending August 13th. Four week ESM sessions are offered beginning June 22nd, July 6th, and July 20th.

Students attending a different CSU in the Fall
The Early Start Math program is a two week program, four days a week for four hours a day. Three Early Start Math sessions are available: June 22nd-July 2nd 12:30pm-4:30pm, July 6th-July 16th 8:00am-12:00pm, and July 6th-July 16th from 12:30pm-4:30pm.

Can I take both Early Start English and Early Start Math during the same two week session?

Students are not allowed to complete both subjects during the same two week session.

What Early Start Math class do I register for?

Students attending CSUB in the Fall
Students with an ELM score between 0-36 are required to enroll in a four week Early Start Math 75 session. Students with an ELM score between 38-48 are required to enroll in a two week Early Start Math 85 session.

 Students attending a different CSU in the Fall
All students requiring Early Start Math will enroll in a two week Early Start Math 50 session.

How much does it cost?

Students attending CSUB in the Fall
The preliminary cost for the Early Start Program is $182 per Early Start subject plus a one-time $2 student union and health fee. For example, if a student is required to enroll in Early Start Math and Early Start English, the total cost for the student would be $366. The fees for the program are subject to change based on approved increases.

Students attending a different CSU in the Fall
The preliminary cost for the Early Start Program is $190 per Early Start subject plus a one-time $2 student union and health fee. For example, if a student is required to enroll in Early Start Math and Early Start English, the total cost for the student would be $380. The fees for the program are subject to change based on approved increases.

What if students are eligible for financial aid?

Students who have applied for financial aid and have an Estimated Family Contribution of $5000 or less may be eligible for a fee waiver.

How do students know if they are eligible for a fee waiver?

Students will also receive a pop-up notification indicating eligibility while registering. The fee waiver will automatically apply if students are eligible; students are not required to submit verification. If students believe they should be eligible or have further questions regarding their financial aid award they should contact the Financial Aid Office at 661-654-3016.

When is payment due?

Payment is due the first day of class. The fee waiver will automatically apply for students that are eligible if their FAFSA is complete, students are not required to complete or submit verification. If students are not eligible for the fee waiver they must submit payment for class fees by the first day of class. If you believe you are eligible for a waiver and your account indicates that you are not, please contact the Financial Aid Office at your home campus prior to completing your enrollment.

How do students pay for the Early Start classes if they are not eligible for the fee waiver?

Students can pay online through their myCSUB with a Mastercard, Discover, American Express (2.9% fee will apply for all credit card transactions) or complete an electronic charge via check. They may also pay on campus at the Cashiers Window with cash, check, or money order.

Students attending CSUB in the Fall
Students met the Early Start Program requirement and they will be registered in the appropriate Fall courses based on their results.

Students attending a different CSU in the Fall
Results will be sent to students’ destination campus within two weeks upon course completion.

Do students have to pay for summer parking?

Yes, there is a fee for parking. The parking permit for a two week Early Start session is $12 and the parking permit for the entire summer is $45. Students can purchase the two week permit on campus at the Cashiers Office and the summer permit online through their MyCSUB account or on campus beginning June 2015. Students also have the option of parking across the street on Camino Media behind Edwards Theater or on Stockdale Hwy by Finish Line at no cost.

Can students stay on campus while completing Early Start courses?

Yes, housing is available during the summer. The tentative cost is $250 with no meals included. Financial Aid is not available for housing.
