What is the Early Start Program?

Early Start is a program that requires incoming students who do not demonstrate readiness for college-level math and/or English to begin remediation during the summer before coming to the CSU.


Who has to take the Early Start Program?

All students who have not demonstrated college readiness in mathematics are required to participate in the Early Start Program (ELM score less than 50). All students who have not demonstrated college readiness in English are required to participate in the Early Start Program (EPT score less than 138).


How can students be exempt from Early Start?

Designated exams and criteria can exempt students from Early Start, please see Exemptions tab. International Students, Out of State Students, and students participating in the CSUB Summer Bridge or College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) are exempt from Early Start.


Who is eligible for the Early Start Program?

Only first-time incoming freshmen are eligible to enroll in the Early Start Program.


Is the program mandatory?

Yes, to all students who have not demonstrated college readiness in English and/or mathematics.

What's next if students select CSUB to complete Early Start?

It takes approximately 24 hours for the system to generate the Enroll in Early Start link once students declare their intent. During the second step the students register for the early start sessions, including dates and times.

How long is each session?

The Early Start English program is a two week program, four days a week for four hours a day.
The Early Start Mathematics program is a two week program, four days a week for four hours a day.

What materials are required for the program?

How much does it cost?

The preliminary cost for the Early Start Program is $182 per Early Start subject. For example, if a student is required to enroll in Early Start Mathematics and Early Start English, the total cost for the student would be $364. The fees for the program are subject to change based on approved increases.

What if students are eligible for financial aid?

Students who have applied for financial aid and have an Estimated Family Contribution of $5000 or less may be eligible for a fee waiver.

How do students know if they are eligible for a fee waiver?

Fee waiver eligibility can be accessed on the students Smart Page on their MyCSUB account.  If students have further questions regarding their financial aid award they should contact our Financial Aid office at 661-654-3016.

What happens after students complete the Early Start Program?

Students met the Early Start Program requirement and they will be placed in the appropriate courses based on their results.

Students can only retake the ELM, not the EPT.

Can students complete Early Start at other CSU campuses?

Yes, it will meet the Early Start requirement. However, CSUB will not accept English scores received through other Early Start Programs and students will remain in the same level of remediation.
