What is the Early Start Program?

The Early Start Program serves CSU admitted freshmen who have not demonstrated proficiency in math and/or English.


Who has to take the Early Start Program?

Students with placement status of Ready w/Support *Early Start Program Required are required to participate in the Early Start Program, as determined by the Early Assessment Program, College Board SAT®, ACT® Test, and multiple measures.


How can students be exempt from Early Start?

Designated exams and criteria can exempt students from Early Start, refer to English Placement Status and Math Placement Status tabs. International Students and Out of State Students are exempt from Early Start.


Who is eligible for the Early Start Program?

Only first-time incoming freshmen are eligible to enroll in the Early Start Program.


Is the program mandatory?

Yes, for all students with placement status of Ready w/Support *Early Start Program Required. Failure to enroll in the required Early Start course(s) may result in cancellation or non-enrollment for fall semester.


How do students enroll for the program at CSUB?

Students attending CSUB in the Fall
Early Start registration is a two-step process. Students first have to login to their MyCSUB account to access the Early Start Smart Page and select the campus where they plan to complete Early Start. Once students complete step one it will take approximately 24 hours for the system to generate the Enroll in Early Start link. During the second step the students register for the early start sessions, including dates and times.

Students attending a different CSU in the Fall
Students first have to login to their home campus student account to access the Early Start Smart Page and select CSU Bakersfield. Once students login to their home campus student account, the CSUB EIP office will receive a direct communication confirming their selection. Students will be contacted within seven days to complete their registration, including dates and times. If students are not contacted within seven days they are encouraged to contact the EIP office directly at 661-654-2193.

What if students attending CSUB in the Fall select a different CSU Campus to complete Early Start?

Students can search Early Start courses offered at other CSU's on the link below. Once the student makes a selection, the selected CSU will contact them directly to complete their registration.

Can I take both Early Start English and Early Start Math during the same session?

Students are not allowed to complete both subjects during the same sessions. For example, students cannot take Early Start English 8:00am-12:00pm and Early Start Math 12:30pm-4:30pm during the same dates.

How much does it cost?

Students attending CSUB in the Fall
The preliminary cost for the Early Start Program is $140 per unit plus a one-time $2 student union and health fee. For example, if a student is required to enroll in a three unit Early Start course, the total cost for the student would be $422. The fees for the program are subject to change based on approved increases.

Students attending a different CSU in the Fall
The preliminary cost for the Early Start Program is $150 per unit plus a one-time $2 student union and health fee. For example, if a student is required to enroll in a three unit Early Start course, the total cost for the student would be $452. The fees for the program are subject to change based on approved increases.


What if students are eligible for financial aid?

Students who have applied for financial aid and have an Estimated Family Contribution of $5000 or less may be eligible for a fee waiver.

How do students know if they are eligible for a fee waiver?

Fee waiver eligibility can be accessed on the students Smart Page on their MyCSUB account. Students will also receive a pop-up notification indicating eligibility while registering. The fee waiver will automatically apply if students are eligible; students are not required to submit verification. If students believe they should be eligible or have further questions regarding their financial aid award they should contact the Financial Aid Office at 661-654-3016.

Students attending a different CSU in the Fall
Fee waiver eligibility can be accessed on the students Smart Page on their home campus student account. Students will also receive a pop-up notification indicating eligibility while registering. The fee waiver will automatically apply if students are eligible; students are not required to submit verification. If students believe they should be eligible or have further questions regarding their financial aid award they should contact the Financial Aid Office at their destination campus.

When is payment due?

Payment is due the Friday before the class begins. The fee waiver will automatically apply for students that are eligible if their FAFSA is complete, students are not required to complete or submit verification. If students are not eligible for the fee waiver they must submit payment for class fees by the first day of class. If students do not submit payment by the deadline they will be dropped for nonpayment. If students believe they should be eligible for a waiver and their account indicates that they are not, they should contact the Financial Aid Office at their home campus prior to completing their enrollment.


How do students pay for the Early Start classes if they are not eligible for the fee waiver?

Students can pay online through their myCSUB with a VISA, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express (2.75% fee will apply for all credit card transactions) or complete an electronic charge via check. They may also pay on campus at the Cashiers Window with cash, check, or money order.


What happens if students do not submit payment by the due date?

Students will automatically be dropped from their classes.


What happens after students complete the Early Start Program?

Students attending CSUB in the Fall
Students met the Early Start Program requirement and they will be registered in the appropriate Fall courses based on their results.

Students attending a different CSU in the Fall
Results will be sent to students’ destination campus within two weeks upon course completion.

What if students are participating in the CAMP program?

Students will participate in designated Early Start courses, please contact CAMP at 661-654-3212.


Can students complete Early Start at community colleges?

Yes, only at approved community colleges. Please contact us at 661-654-2193 for further information.


Do students have to pay for summer parking?

The parking permit for a two-week Early Start session is $16 and for a three-week Early Start session is $24. If students are enrolled in a four-week Early Start session they can purchase two two-week session parking permits. The parking permit for the entire summer is $42. Students can purchase the Early Start parking permits on campus at the Cashiers Office and the summer permit online through their MyCSUB account or on campus beginning June 2018.


Can students stay on campus while completing Early Start courses?

The tentative cost is $250 for a two-week Early Start session, $375 for a three-week Early Start session, and $500 for a four-week Early Start session with no meals included. Financial Aid is not available for housing. Check ins are the Sunday before the session begins and check outs are by noon the Friday after the session ends. If students pay the fee and wish to cancel, they must cancel no later than the Thursday before their check in to get reimbursed. The application is available on the housing website.
