English Placement Status

CSUB considers multiple assessments to determine what English course a student will take in the Fall. Based on academic achievement, the appropriate Category will determine a student's next steps.

CATEGORY I (All Majors)


  • A score of 3 or above on the AP Language or Composition Test
  • A score of 3 or above on the AP Composition and Literature Test
  • Completion of a college course (grade of "C-" or better) that satisfies the CSU General Education English Composition requirement

CATEGORY II (All Majors)


High School Courses and Grade Point Average

  • 10th-11th High School GPA greater than 3.3
  • 10th-11th High School GPA greater than 3.0 AND AP, IB, ERWC, or Honors English course OR 5 or more years of English

CSU Early Assessment Program (EAP), taken in conjunction with the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) in English Language Arts/Literacy

  • A result of "Standard Exceeded"
  • A result of "Standard Met" AND successful completion of appropriate 12th grade English course**

New SAT-College Board SAT® Test Evidence Based Reading and Writing Section

  • A score of 550 or above 
  • A score between 510-540 AND successful completion of appropriate 12th grade English course**

Old SAT-College Board SAT® Test Critical Reading Section

  • A score of 500 or above 
  • A score between 460-490 AND successful completion of appropriate 12th grade English course**

ACT® Test English Section

  • A cut score of 22 or above
  • A cut score between 19-21 AND successful completion of appropriate 12th grade English course**

** Approved High School courses with grade of 'C-' or higher: Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC), Advanced Placement (AP) English Language and Composition, Advanced Placement (AP) English Literature and Composition, International Baccalaureate (IB) English, and English courses approved for honors credit by the University of California (A-G).

  • 10th-11th High School GPA greater than 3.0 AND 4 or more years of English

New SAT-College Board SAT® Test Evidence Based Reading and Writing Section

  • A score between 510-540 AND 4 years of High School English

Old SAT-College Board SAT® Test Critical Reading Section

  • A score between 460-490 AND 4 years of High School English

ACT® Test English Section

  • A score between 19-21 AND 4 years of High Shool English

  • Eligible to Enroll in Stretch English Course

CATEGORY IV (All Majors)


High School Courses and Grade Point Average

  • Minimum CSU GPA admission requirements

  • A result of "Standard Nearly Met"
  • A result of "Standard Not Met"

New SAT-College Board SAT® Reasoning Test Evidence Based Reading and Writing Section

  • A score of 500 or below 

Old SAT-College Board SAT® Test Critical Reading Section

  • A score of 450 or below 

ACT® Test English Section

  • A score of 18 or below
