Early Start English Exemptions

CSU Early Assessment Program (EAP), taken in conjunction with the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) in English Language Arts/Literacy Exemptions:

  • A result of "Standard Exceeded: Ready for CSU or participating CCC college-level coursework in English" on the CAASPP Early Assessment Program (EAP) exam
  • A result of "Standard Met: Conditionally Ready for CSU or participating CCC college-level coursework in English" on the CAASPP Early Assessment Program (EAP) exam plus successful completion of appropriate 12th grade English course**

New SAT-College Board SAT® Reasoning Test Exemptions:

  • A CSU Readiness cut score of 550 or above on the Evidence Based Reading and Writing section
  • A CSU Conditionally Ready cut score between 510-540 on the Evidence Based Reading and Writing section plus successful completion of appropriate 12th grade English course**

In March 2016, the College Board began administering a new SAT. The new SAT scores are different than the old SAT scores. The CSU will accept both old and new SAT scores for students graduating in 2020 and prior. Students graduating after 2020 will be required to take the new SAT.

Old SAT-College Board SAT® Reasoning Test Exemptions:

  • A CSU Readiness cut score of 500 or above on the "critical reading section" (formerly verbal)
  • A CSU Conditionally Ready cut score between 460-490 on the "critical reading section" (formerly verbal) plus successful completion of appropriate 12th grade English course**

ACT® English Test Exemptions:

  • A CSU Readiness cut score of 22 or above
  • A CSU Conditionally Ready cut score between 19-21 plus successful completion of appropriate 12th grade English course**

Other Exemptions:

  • A score of 5 or 6 on the KHSD Golden State Exam
  • A score of 3 or above on the Advanced Placement (AP) Language and Composition or Literature and Composition Exam
  • Completion (grade of "C" or better) of ENGL IA, College Composition, or its equivalent at another college

** As a conditionally ready student you can be college ready by taking an approved yearlong English course your senior year and earn a grade 'C' or higher. The following high school courses have been approved: Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC), Advanced Placement (AP) English Language and Composition, Advanced Placement (AP) English Literature and Composition, International Baccalaureate (IB) English, and English courses approved for honors credit by the University of California (A-G).

In addition, international students and out of state students are exempt from the Early Start requirements. Students participating in the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) are required to enroll in designated Early Start courses.
