Two days of festivities May 19-20 culminated in the inauguration of Horace Mitchell as CSUB’s fourth president and celebration of the university’s 35th anniversary.

The celebration began with a gala opening for CSUB’s spring theater production of “The Boy Friend,” the musical romp that gave Julie Andrews her start.

Following faculty lectures May 20, some 750 founding and current faculty, staff and guests enjoyed lunch in ’Runner Park. Alumni and former faculty were among those who addressed the crowd and the new president.

The inauguration highlighted the festivities. In line with Mitchell’s theme of “Linking the Past to the Future: Excellence through Partnerships,” the grand processional included members of current and emeriti faculty and administrators in full academic regalia. Following the inaugural procession was the March of the Alumni. Alumni marched grouped in the decade of their graduation.

CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed and Murray Galinson, chair of the CSU Board of Trustees, were also present at the inauguration. During the investiture Reed presented Mitchell with the CSUB Presidential Medallion, a new seal designed especially for the occasion.

Mitchell said the inauguration was a time for the university to renew its commitment to “meeting the changing intellectual, educational and cultural needs of the region it serves.” He also discussed future development for CSUB like the addition of new programs and planning for enrollment growth.

A sold out Inaugural Ball held at the Seven Oaks Country Club concluded the celebration.
