President's Monthly Campus Update

Fall 2007 marks the beginning of my fourth academic year as President of CSUB. The June 2008 graduating class will be my first full student cohort. It is my pleasure to welcome back all returning, new, and transferring students, and new and returning faculty and staff. The coming week is filled with activities to welcome and engage everyone from our first-time freshmen to our 60+ volunteers. I extend a special thanks to our dedicated faculty and staff who have worked diligently to make these events possible. I invite you to begin the year by getting to know our newest students during Welcome Week and by sharing your ideas with other faculty and staff at University Day. The 2007-08 academic year promises to be filled with challenges and opportunities for each of us. I wish you a rich, full, and transforming year.
Each fall we look forward to University Day as CSUB's official welcome for faculty and staff and the signal of the start of the academic year. Events scheduled for the day promote engagement and sharing of ideas and experiences centered around this year's theme, "Envisioning Our Future." In my University Day Address, I will highlight milestones of the past year and share goals for the upcoming year as we continue on our path to extend our excellence. Breakout sessions for faculty and staff include: "Our Mutual Responsibility for Improving Collegiality on Campus," "Enhancing the College Experience for Our Students," and "Envisioning the Ideal Teaching, Working, and Learning Experiences at CSUB." I look forward to seeing you for a continental breakfast to start the day on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 at 9:00 a.m. in the Dore Theatre. New students will be introduced to CSUB during a Week of Welcome (WOW Week). Vice President for Student Affairs Shelley Ruelas and Dean of Student Life Manny Mourtzanos invite faculty and staff to get to know new students at a kick-off Meet and Greet BBQ on Wednesday, September 5, 2007 at 4:00 p.m. outside of the Dining Commons. New students will have just completed their move into the Residence Halls. The bar-be-cue begins a week of activities scheduled for new students. New Student Convocation
The Third Annual New Student Convocation will take place on Thursday, September 6, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. in the Doré Theatre. The convocation introduces new students to the CSUB Roadrunner First-Year Resources for Undergraduate Success & High Achievement (RUSH-A) program which stresses the principles "Learn," "Engage," and "Serve." A student resource fair will precede the convocation from 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. just outside the Doré Theatre. The resource fair will continue after the convocation along with an ice cream social and club fair. For further information, please contact the Division of Student Affairs at 654-2161.
60+ Club Possibilities Day
The 60+ Club will start the academic year with its annual Possibilities Day welcome event. A vital part of the CSUB family, it is the longest-standing volunteer organization at CSUB. Club members donate hundreds of volunteer service hours to our university each year. During Possibilities Day, new and interested members will receive information regarding volunteer opportunities, events and activities offered through the organization. The event will take place on Thursday, September 6, 2007 from 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. in the Runner Café. For more information, please call 654-3211.
Vice President for University Advancement
We have been conducting a national search to find a successor for Mike Chertok as Vice President for University Advancement. To date we have been unsuccessful in landing a worthy candidate. Therefore, the search will continue. However, we are fortunate that Mike has agreed to extend his tenure until mid-December. Please join me in thanking Mike for his continuing commitment to the University as represented by his delaying his retirement, after more than 14 years of service to CSUB and more than 40 years of service in higher education.
Rabobank Supports Kern Economic Journal
Congratulations to Dr. Abbas Grammy, Professor of Economics, publisher and managing editor of the Kern Economic Journal, for receipt of a $10,000 donation from Rabobank to support the publication of the Kern Economic Journal. Published quarterly in February, May, August, and November, the Journal analyzes issues affecting the economic vitality of Kern County. Scholarly articles which address local to global issues impacting the Kern economy may be submitted to Dr. Grammy for consideration. Thank you, Rabobank, and congratulations again, Dr. Grammy.
Local Hero of the Year
Dr. Anthony Nuño, Professor of Hispanic American/Mexican American Literature, will receive a "Local Hero of the Year Award." Union Bank of California and Valley Public Television (KVPT) are honoring Dr. Nuño for his work in mentoring students. Dr. Nuño and six other recipients will receive the award on September 6, 2007 at a gala reception at the Valley Public Television studios in Fresno. In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, KVPT will broadcast profiles of Dr. Nuño and the other awardees throughout the Central Valley beginning September 15, 2007. Congratulations, Dr. Nuño, on a well-deserved award.
Campus Master Plan Final EIR
We have now completed the Final Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for our updated Campus Master Plan and posted it on our homepage.
The CSU Board of Trustees will consider the Final EIR as part of its agenda for a meeting to be held September 18-19, 2007 at the CSU Office of the Chancellor in Long Beach. Specific actions to be considered include:
- Certification of the Final EIR
- Approval of an enrollment ceiling increase from 12,000 FTES to 18,000 FTES, and
- Approval of the Revised Campus Master Plan

The next University Council meeting is scheduled for October 19, 2007 from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. in the Albertson Room.
