President's Monthly Campus Update

We have survived the multiple heat waves of summer and fall is fast approaching. In a few weeks, along with looking forward to cooler temperatures, we look forward to welcoming new and returning faculty, staff, and students and to beginning the 2006-2007 academic year with renewed energy, new academic programs and degrees, and new partnerships for excellence.
We will welcome our new and returning faculty and staff on September 5th with our University Day celebration. The event begins with a celebration of CSUB excellence through the recognition of staff awards and faculty honors. New faculty and personnel also will be introduced to the campus community. This year's University Day theme, "Clarifying our Vision of Excellence," sets a framework for investigating topics of importance to CSUB as we advance toward realization of our vision. My University Day Address will expound on our strategic plan, which operationalizes our vision for excellence. Afternoon breakout sessions will include facilitated discussions on the following critical topics:
Enriching the diversity of the University
Enhancing the student experience beyond the classroom
Strengthening campus community in a time of change.
These discussions begin a year-long review of our educational programs and student services and are designed to engage all faculty and staff from broad and different perspectives and cross-sections of the CSUB community in active dialogue about the University's vision. We are pleased to have 37 new tenure-track faculty, full-time lecturers, coaches, and academic administrators join the CSUB family. We will introduce them to the University's advisory and foundation boards, executive leadership, and academic and advisory committees at a reception in the Dezember Reading Room of the Walter Stiern Library on Wednesday, August 30, 2006, 4:00 - 7:00 pm. First Lady Barbara Mitchell and I will welcome new and returning faculty at two receptions in our home on September 7th and 8th. The receptions give faculty an opportunity to gather and reconnect in a casual setting across schools and departments prior to the start of classes. This year's international theme celebrates the diversity of cultures embraced at CSUB. An additional highlight will be faculty vocal and instrumental performances. New Student Convocation
On Monday, September 11th, from 11:00 am to noon in the Doré Theatre, we will host our Second Annual First Year Convocation for all students who are new to the university. Lunch will follow immediately thereafter in Alumni Park, with music provided by Dr. Doug Davis, Chair of the Performing Arts Department, and the CSUB Jazz Ensemble. The CSUB Roadrunner First-Year Resources for Undergraduate Success & High Achievement (RUSH-A) Program was initiated last year as part of our vision for excellence in the quality of the student experience and community engagement.
Each of the program's three integrated components, "Learn," "Engage," and "Serve," offers seminars for first-time freshmen, transfer, and re-entry students. The "Learn" component is a one-unit "Orientation to the University" seminar, which provides students with necessary information about CSUB and helps them develop important survival skills (CSUB 101 & 301). The "Engage" component is a two-unit "Passion to Learn" seminar covering topics that are the passion of the instructor (CSUB 103 & 303). The "Serve" component is a two-unit "Roadrunner Ambassador" seminar through which students carry out a service project for the University or the Bakersfield community (CSUB 105 & 305). CSUB 101 is the only required seminar. More than 300 students attended the First Annual First-Year Student Convocation and Luncheon last fall. We expect an equally large attendance this year.
Master's in Biology
CSUB recently received approval to offer a Master's in Biology beginning Fall 2007. The Master's in Biology program will have both research-based and coursework-based tracks. Classes will be offered in the afternoons and evenings to accommodate the schedules of students who work full time. A minimum grade point average of 3.0 is required for admission and applicants must take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). This program will greatly benefit local educators who wish to pursue an advanced science degree, as well as working professionals in the food and agriculture industries. The Dorothy J. Jones Trust
The CSUB Foundation received a second distribution from the Dorothy J. Jones Trust in the amount of $500,000. Combined with a distribution earlier in the year, the total distributed to date is $1.25 million. Dorothy Jones, who died last year at the age of 91, was a retired teacher in the Greenfield Unified School District. She earned her teaching credential from what was then the Bakersfield Center of Fresno State University. The Foundation has established a Dorothy Jones Endowment Fund that will support scholarships for students preparing to become teachers. CSUB is deeply grateful and indebted to Mrs. Jones for her generosity, her support of the University, and her support of the teaching profession.
GEAR UP Grant
The U.S. Department of Education approved funding for CSUB's GEAR UP grant at Arvin High School for $655,623 for the 2006-2007 fiscal year. GEAR UP, which stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, is a student development program designed to increase the college readiness and success of underserved students and to provide scholarships to low-income students. The grant follows a cohort of students from seventh grade through high school. CSUB's GEAR UP program at Arvin is in its fifth year. The grant represents the full remaining amount of CSUB's multi-year grant. Congratulations go out to Dr. Ed Sasaki, Special Assistant to the Provost for Academic Programs, and to the Academic Programs Department whose staff helped revise participation goals and reporting to ensure that the CSUB GEAR UP Program continues for another year at Arvin High School.
William Randolph Hearst / CSU Trustees' Award
Congratulations are in order for CSUB student Summer Wood, who was selected as a recipient of the William Randolph Hearst / CSU Trustees' Award for Outstanding Achievement for the 2006-2007 academic year. Ms. Wood is a senior nursing student and is one of nineteen recipients who will attend an awards presentation at the CSU Board of Trustees' meeting on September 19th. We are proud to acknowledge Ms. Wood as one of CSUB's outstanding students.
Kern County Superintendent of Schools Fall Welcome
For the second year, CSUB hosted the Kern County Superintendent of Schools Fall Welcome for their employees. Approximately 1,400 public school teachers, administrators, and staff filled the Icardo Center on August 17th to celebrate their achievements, cast vision for the new year, and provide employees with benefit information. The CSUB School of Education, Outreach, University Extension, Runner Bookstore, and the Ernest Williams Scholarship Committee were on hand to provide information about professional and career advancement, as well as educational opportunities at CSUB. The event is facilitated by Evelyn Nelson, Executive Assistant to the President, in coordination with Dr. Larry Reider, Kern County Superintendent of Schools, and Steve Sanders, KCSOS Division Administrator in Child Development & Family Studies.
Local high school students had the opportunity to study applied economics through the Enterprise College program, taught by Dr. Abbas Grammy, Economics Professor in the School of Business & Public Administration. Seventy honors and advanced placement students from Bakersfield area high schools participated in the 25th year of the class, which uses "real world" applications and guest speakers to teach economics theory and leadership principles. Enterprise College also gives students a head start in developing skills necessary for college success.
CSUB Children's Art Institute
The CSUB Children's Art Institute launched its first summer art classes for children in first through sixth grades. The Institute hosted 34 students who participated in Level I or Level II art studio classes in drawing, painting, and "mostly mud." The Institute took place on the CSUB main campus utilizing CSUB's art facilities that include the drawing, painting, and ceramics studios. Under the direction of the Institute's 2006 artist-in-residence, Margaret Nowling, children enjoyed studying the works of renowned contemporary and old master artists. On August 10th, families of participants were treated to a culminating art exhibition of the children's artwork in the Todd Madigan Art Gallery, organized by CSUB pre-service student teachers. The Children's Art Institute was established in 2006 to provide cultural enrichment to members of greater Kern County and to honor the memory of Jane W. Turner. The School of Humanities and Social Science provides the teachers as part of the Art 302 curriculum. Director of the program is Dr. Dianne Turner of the School of Education, and Curriculum Coordinator is Margaret Nowling of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Bakersfield Homeless Center Grant
Students in Dr. Chandrasekhar ("Chandra") Commuri's PPA 520 class offered in Winter 2006 recently wrote a grant proposal for the Bakersfield Homeless Center's Discovery Depot Child Care Center. The Bakersfield Homeless Center is the only family homeless shelter between North Hollywood and Salinas, and its Discovery Depot is the only licensed child care center located in a homeless shelter in the state of California. The Raskind Foundation, a local foundation dedicated to local causes, funded the $15,000 grant, which will allow expansion of the child care center's infant/toddler program. We applaud Dr. Commuri and his students Lindsey Zwicky, Judy Snyder, Desiree Klinoff, Beatriz Felix, and Sergio Hernandez, four of whom are undergraduates, for their demonstrated commitment to education and to making a difference in the Bakersfield community.
Spirituality In Nursing Seminar
The CSUB alumni nursing chapter held its first "Spirituality in Nursing" seminar on August 18th in the Doré Theater. The seminar was designed to educate health care professionals and others in both the assessment of spiritual needs and the provision of spiritual care. Presentations explored the relationships between spirituality and the practice of nursing, including nursing roles in faith communities, palliative care, and challenges including assisting patients and families in the dying process, comfort, and bereavement. The event was organized by Pamala McCarver, president of the CSUB alumni nursing chapter and registered nurse, and Peggy Leapley, Chair of CSUB's Nursing Department. The seminar was expected to raise $5,000 toward a new nursing building on the CSUB campus. Our community partners included Kaiser Permanente, Hoffmann Hospice, and San Joaquin Community Hospital. Sponsors were Rosewood Retirement Community, Optimal Hospice Care, and Comprehensive Blood and Cancer Center.
Sister City Delegation to Querétaro
Completing a recent trip to the city of Querétaro in the state of Querétaro, Mexico, were Dr. Henry Lowenstein, Dean of the School of Business and Public Administration; Dr. (Stanley) Eugene Clark, School of Humanities and Social Sciences Interim Associate Dean; Dr. Mark Martinez, Political Science Professor; and Michael Chertok, Vice President for University Advancement. The purpose of the trip was to sign reciprocal student exchange agreements with two universities: the Universidad Contemporánea, a private university, and the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro, a public university. The agreements will allow students from Querétaro, Mexico, to study at CSUB for up to two quarters. The aim of the program is to "promote global learning, enrich the educational and cultural ties and develop areas of mutual cooperation and interest for undergraduate and graduate students." The Ixchel Youth Orchestra of Querétaro will travel to Bakersfield for a cultural exchange visit September 21-25, performing at local high schools, the Fox Theatre, and the Kern County Fair. CSUB Foundation Board
I am pleased to announce the election of three new members of the CSUB Foundation Board, each of whom will serve three-year terms: Tom DeNatale, a partner in the law firm Klein, DeNatale, Goldner, Cooper, Rosenlieb & Kimball, LLC, and a member of the Dean's Executive Advisory Council in the School of Business and Public Administration; Joe McIlvaine, President of Paramount Farming and a member of the CSUB Foundation for Research Board of Directors; and Geoffrey King, a CSUB graduate and partner in the accounting firm of Barbich, Longcrier, Hooper & King and past recipient of the CSUB Alumni Association's Alumnus of the Year Award. In addition, the Foundation Board re-elected for additional three year terms members Mel Atkinson, President of the M.D. Atkinson Company; Morgan Clayton, President of Tel-Tec, Inc.; Bruce Freeman, President of Castle & Cooke California, Inc.; Bruce Maclin, Chairman of the Board of San Joaquin Bank; and Ginger Moorhouse, Editor and Chairman of the Board of the Bakersfield Californian. Ben Stinson, owner of Stinson Stationers, and Rogers Brandon, Vice President of American General Media, continue to serve as Chairman and Vice Chairman, respectively.
President's Advisory Council
I am pleased to announce that I have appointed three members of the Bakersfield community to the President's Advisory Board. They are Mathew Park, Jay Rosenlieb, and Ed Taylor. Mathew is an alumnus of CSUB with a Master's in Public Administration and is executive director of the Kern County Farm Bureau. Jay is a partner in the law firm of Klein, DeNatale, Goldner, Cooper, Rosenlieb & Kimball, LLC, and Ed is Vice President of Wells Fargo Bank. All are active in leadership positions in Bakersfield professional and non-profit organizations.
CSUB Alumni Association Board of Directors
The Alumni Association Board of Directors is seeing a changing of the guard for 2006-2007. The Association thanks members who served on the Board in 2005-2006: Jack Gallon of Taft College; Geoff Gould of Riverlakes Church; Carla Johns of the CSUB University Police; and Scott Stanley of Merrill Lynch.
