California State University, Bakersfield's third annual California Writer Series continues with a reading by author Brian Turner on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m. in the Dezember Reading Room of the Walter W. Stiern Library.

Turner is a soldier-poet whose debut book of poems, "Here, Bullet," won the 2005 Beatrice Hawley Award, the New York Times "Editor's Choice" selection, the 2006 Pen Center USA "Best in the West" award, and the 2007 Poets Prize, among others.

Turner served seven years in the U.S. Army, to include one year as an infantry team leader in Iraq with the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. Prior to that, he was deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1999-2000 with the 10th Mountain Division. Turner's poetry has been published in Poetry Daily, The Georgia Review and other journals, and in the Voices in Wartime Anthology published in conjunction with the feature-length documentary film of the same name.

The California Writers Series primary goal is to inspire, encourage and influence the student body and CSUB campus community by bringing contemporary writers throughout California to share their work. "It can be an amazing experience for students to meet a writer who shares something of our diverse and vibrant contemporary California culture," says Marit MacArthur, CSUB English professor and director of the California Writers Series.

The event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by CSUB English Honors Society, Sigma Tau Delta, in association with Walter W. Stiern Library, the English department, and Russo's Books.
