California State University, Bakersfield's "Students in Free Enterprise" team placed first at the regional championships in Denver, Colo., and earned a spot at the national finals. CSUB defeated teams from Brigham Young University, Bryant University and Colorado State University.
In this financial planning competition, teams were presented with hypothetical case studies about a family in financial distress. The student teams had 36 hours to research the situation, analyze the financial issues and recommend a financial plan. Their plans were formally presented to a panel of expert judges.
The CSUB SIFE team is comprised of Joleen Camacho, Kimberly Cooter, Brennan Ott, and Amy Zachary. The team is under the tutelage of David Olson, CSUB professor of management.
"The students all feel like this is one of the best things they have done at CSUB," Olson said. "They have the opportunity to learn so much material in a small amount of time and then they present their evaluation to professional judges. It is also a great opportunity to meet with business students from other universities from a broad geographical area."
The national finals, "Duel in the Desert," will be held at the University of Arizona in early March.
