California State University, Bakersfield prepares to begin the 2008-09 academic year with its annual University Day program on Monday, Sept. 8, in Doré Theatre, one week before fall quarter classes begin. The program will begin at 9 a.m.
Similar to years past, University Day will welcome back returning members of the campus community and introduce new faculty, coaches, senior administrators and staff.
CSUB President Horace Mitchell's annual University Day address is one significant aspect of the program. "We are looking forward to the opening of another exciting academic year," Mitchell said. "University Day gives us the opportunity to come together to reflect on our progress to date, identify the significant challenges and opportunities ahead, and outline our priorities and plans for the year. It reinforces our tradition of working collaboratively toward the continued advancement of our vision for excellence."
Following his address, Mitchell will award faculty and staff honors from the 2007-08 academic year.
This year's theme, "Staying Connected with Our Students," will focus on CSUB's collective efforts for teaching, working with and serving the student body. Following the welcoming remarks and address, afternoon breakout sessions for the faculty and staff will provide interactive discussions where individuals can share their thoughts and experiences on multiple subjects. Several discussion sessions will be available during the afternoon including:
- Acculturating Our Students to the University Environment
- Classroom Management: Strategies and Tips
- Universal Design for Learning: Pedagogies for All Learners
- Enhancing Learning Through Applied Experiences
- Shared Governance
- Deskercise: Relieving Stress at Work
