California State University, Bakersfield's political science department and the Associated Students, Inc. will host an open forum "Corporate Warrior: The Privatization of Conflict and War" on Monday (May 7) at 7 p.m. in the Student Union multipurpose room. The forum will feature guest speaker Peter Singer of the Brookings Institution.

Singer is senior fellow, the youngest person to be named in the 90-year history of the Brookings Institution, and director of the 21st Century Defense Initiative. He is considered one of the leading experts on changes in 21st century warfare. He has written for many major newspapers including the Boston Globe, L.A. Times, New York Times, and Washington Post. Singer has also appeared as a military affairs commentator for ABC's "Nightline," CNN, FOX, and CBS's "60 Minutes." Singer is a founder and organizer of the U.S.-Islamic World Forum, a global conference that brings together leaders from across the U.S. and Muslim worlds.

Singer has written two books on the subject of 21st century warfare. "Corporate Warriors: The Rise of the Privatized Military Industry" explored the new industry of private companies providing military services for hire. His second book, "Children at War" deals with the rise of child soldier groups and was the first such book to explore this topic.

Admission is free and light refreshments will be provided. For more information on the forum please contact Tina Giblin, in the political science department, at (661) 654-2141.
