California State University Bakersfield's Alumni Association along with the Bakersfield Wine Society pop the cork on the 11th-annual Party in the Park, Friday, May 11th at 5:30 p.m. in CSUB's Alumni Park.

The event raises thousands of dollars in scholarships for CSUB students and has become one of the Central Valley's biggest wine-tasting extravaganzas. Serving some of California's best wines and a selection of grilled and cold hors d'oeuvres, the event attracts more than 60 wineries and 800 attendees.

Each year wineries from all over California come to help support student education at CSUB. "Bakersfield is a great venue for us, and we're delighted to be able to help with such a worthy cause," said Daryl Groom of Beam Wine Estates in Sonoma County. "I'm aware of how important a college education is, and we're very happy to support CSU Bakersfield in its effort to provide scholarships for deserving students."

Last year's event brought in nearly 800 attendees and raised more than $9,000 for the Alumni Scholarship Fund. CSUB Alumni Relations Director Shannon Hill enjoys "seeing people have a good time while connecting and giving back to the campus. Hosting the event in Alumni Park brings people home to a festive outdoor setting. And the support we get for our scholarship fund is a great outcome to a great party."

A silent auction will again take place, which in previous years has included artwork, garden art, jewelry, sports memorabilia, wine, wine items and CSUB items. People can bid on their favorite items while sampling wine and nibbling hors d'oeuvres which include sausages donated by Green Frog Market and grilled by CSUB grill-masters; cheese, fruit, bread and desserts are also available.

The event, which precedes the annual Bakersfield Jazz Festival, is held in Alumni Park on the CSUB campus, just east of the Walter Stiern Library. Cost for the tasting is $35 per person in advance or $45 the day of the event, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Alumni Scholarship Endowment.

Available for pre-purchase only are special weekend package deals for both Party in the Park and Bakersfield Jazz Festival.

Please make reservations by Tuesday, May 8. For reservations or more information, please call the Alumni Relations office at (661) 654-3211.
