California State University Bakersfield's Opera Theatre will present An Evening of Opera and Zarzuela Scenes, Friday, April 27, at 7 p.m. in the Dore Theater.
The evening will start with a scene from "Hansel and Gretel" by Engelbert Humperdinck, with Cora Frantz as Gretel and Leah Lamas as Hansel. Children of all ages will enjoy the lovely music ending with the famous prayer duet.
Appropriate for the weekend before the Cinco de Mayo are several scenes of two zarzuelas, or Spanish-light opera. Erika Santiago and Andrianna Medel will sing the famous Tangos from "La Gran Via" by Chueca and Valverde; Juan Morales, Almalinda Duran and Jessica Trevino will sing duets and arias from "Dona Francisquita" by Vives. The scenes will be sung in Spanish with supertitles, text that is displayed above or next to the performer, in English.
The program will also include scenes from "Don Pasquale" by Donizetti and "Cosi fan tutte" by Mozart. Sasanna Efsaeff and Adam Calvillo will portray Norina and Dr. Malatesta from "Don Pasquale"; Marisa Johnson, Kirsty Macdonald, Sara Kean, Bryce Loo, Katie Moyes and Adam Calvillo will perform various duets from the Mozart opera.
Roger Upton is in charge of costumes, and Ray Finnell of lighting and scenery. Peggy Sears directs and Patrick Bender will accompany from the piano.
