Mona Twocats, a religious studies major at California State University, Bakersfield, has been selected as recipient of the 2006-07 Dr. Gary and Katy Kessler Scholarship. The Kessler Scholarship, which awards $300 in the fall term to a graduating senior in the religious studies and/or philosophy programs, was established in 2005 by Gary Kessler, CSUB professor emeritus and founding faculty in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies; and Katy Kessler, 1991 CSUB alumnus and long time administrative assistant to the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies.
"This year's selection, though unanimous, was very difficult," said Dan Boisvert, philosophy professor and chair of this year's selection committee. "We are proud of Mona. She has retained a high grade point average, has received a number of academic honors, and has worked tirelessly in the Bakersfield community, primarily with women's groups and the homeless. She's just the kind of person that Gary and Katy had in mind when they created this scholarship."
Twocats' academic accomplishments include being named a 2006 McNair Scholar, member of 2006 Alpha Chi National Honor Society, 1992 President's Scholar, and member of the Dean's List seven times throughout her career at CSUB. She has also served as chair of the Kern County Homeless Collaborative, member of the Kern County Homeless Court Project, founder and board chair of Women's Resources of Kern, and regional coordinator of Baylor College of Medicine's National Study of Women with Physical Disabilities.
