Two graduate students at California State University, Bakersfield will continue their education thanks to scholarships awarded by the CSUB Alumni Association. Kenna Jones and Athena Lonich were both awarded $750 to pursue their master's degrees.

Jones, who graduated in 2005; and Lonich, who graduated in 2004 from the CSUB Antelope Valley campus, both with degrees in psychology, will now focus on the next step in their education a graduate degree in social work.

"I am honored to have been awarded the alumni scholarship," Jones said. "Financial assistance is always appreciated, but beyond that is the Alumni Association's belief that my education is a worthy investment. ... That is priceless. As a social worker, I am used to reaching out to those in need, but it is a new experience to personally benefit from the generosity of others."

Shannon Hill, CSUB's director of alumni relations, said the Alumni Association has awarded more than $12,000 in student scholarships since 1993. The Alumni Scholarship Endowment was established in 1990 with a gift of $5,000, and as the endowment grows, so will the monies available for student scholarships.

The first awards were made during the 1993-1994 academic year. "Eligibility for the alumni scholarships is based on acceptance to a CSUB graduate or credential program, maintenance of a 3.0 grade point average, demonstrated financial need and participation in extracurricular activities that benefit the community and the university," said Marilyn Hallman, chair for the scholarship committee.

A large portion of the Alumni Association's fundraising comes from its signature event, the annual CSUB Party in the Park. This year's Party in the Park welcomed a~sold-out crowd of more than 730 partygoers. Some 50 wineries were featured and more than $6,000 was raised to support the Alumni Scholarship Fund. The silent and oral auction raised additional funds to support the Alumni Park Project. Party in the Park 2007 is slated for May 11.
