Los Angeles poet Wanda Coleman will be the next featured author in California State University, Bakersfield's California Writers Series. Coleman will read her poetry at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 19, in the Albertson Room of the Doré Theatre.

The series is sponsored by the Xi Tau Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the CSUB English honor society, which helps bring in both established and upcoming writers from throughout California. Admission is free and the public is invited.

Coleman was born in 1946 and is a former medical secretary, magazine editor, journalist and scriptwriter. Coleman has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation for her poetry. In 1999 she won the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize. Her books of poetry and short fiction include "Mercurochrome: New Poems," "Bathwater Wine" and "Heavy Daughter Blues: Poems & Stories 1968-1986."

Coleman will be available to sign copies of her books, which will be for sale after her reading.
