California State University, Bakersfield's Todd Madigan Gallery premieres its fall exhibition of photographer Robert Weingarten's work titled, "Another America: A Testimonial to the Amish." The exhibit opened Thursday (Sept. 14) and runs through Nov. 22.
Between 2001 and 2004 Weingarten, a California resident, photographed the daily living and pastoral environments of Amish communities in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Tennessee and Iowa. The collection includes about 70 photographs.
Michael Johnson, director of CSUB's Todd Madigan Gallery, said, "Given the Amish refusal of modern technology, including photography, Weingarten kept a respectful distance from his subjects yet manages to convey in these intensely beautiful images a way of being that, despite its seeming utterly alien to our 21st century culture, is a strange reflection of us," he continued. "They are visual poems about time, place and humanity, and the series reads as a sort of allegory of existence."
Weingarten will attend a special reception for the exhibit and sign books on Thursday, Sept. 28, at 6 p.m. in the Albertson Room adjacent to the gallery. Admission and parking is free.
The Todd Madigan Gallery's exhibit hours are Tuesdays through Thursdays from 1 to 5 p.m., and Saturdays 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.
