Volunteers are being sought for the 13th annual Kern County Regional Science Bowl by the California State University, Bakersfield School of Natural Science and Mathematics. The Science Bowl will be held at CSUB on Saturday, Feb. 12, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The event features 32 five-member teams from 15 Kern County high schools competing in a fast-paced, question-answer quiz format that covers physics, biology, chemistry, math, earth science, computer science and astronomy.

The top two teams advance to the finals and compete in a double-elimination round, which will be televised on Channel 15, the educational channel. The Science Bowl winner will advance to the National Science Bowl sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, which is held in Washington, D.C., in May.

Thomas Meyer, CSUB's interim dean of Natural Science and Mathematics, and Science Bowl coordinator, is looking for volunteers to help run the event and for local businesses that are interested in donating prizes for the students.

"The previous events were a great success because of the many campus and community volunteers and supporters," Meyer said. "In return for their efforts, volunteers will get to watch Kern County's top science students compete. Plus the volunteers will be provided a T-shirt, morning snack and lunch."

Meyer added that all persons, regardless of educational background, are welcome to help. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Penny Lampkins, CSUB Computer Science Department secretary, at (661) 664-3082, or plampkins@csub.edu.
