A special memorial recognition of Shinsuke Sato, a
Japanese student at California State University, Bakersfield
who was killed by a drunken driver in Los
Angeles County last September, is scheduled during the
School of Business and Public Administration commencement
ceremony Saturday.
Sato would have been a graduating senior had he survived the
accident near Santa Clarita as he was returning to
Bakersfield Sept. 12, 2004, with other students from a
baseball game in Southern California.
The Government of Japan has arranged for his parents,
Yukinobu and Tomoko Sato, to attend and they have flown to
Bakersfield from Yokohama, Japan. The deputy consul general
of Japan will attend and assist in the ceremony.
CSUB President Horace Mitchell will present the parents a
certificate of recognition in their son’s memory and the
national anthem of Japan will be played in their honor.
The School of Business and Public Administration
commencement ceremony is Saturday at 5:45 p.m. in the Icardo
Center on the CSUB campus.
