California State University, Bakersfield students dominated the competition at the first California Collegiate Sales Competition recently at CSU Sacramento.
CSUB student competitors Jessica Sanchez, Alton Saceaux, and Christina Varner had the highest combined scores and took first place as a team at the April 1 competition. Varner received the highest combined score as an individual competitor and won first place taking home $1,500. Sanchez won second place in the ADP category and Saceaux won second place in the Northwestern Mutual category. Each student received a cash award; a plaque was awarded to the team.
“I am very proud of our team's outstanding performance,” said marketing professor Ron Pimentel. “They trained hard throughout winter quarter in preparation for the competition, and they are each exceptionally bright, capable students.”
Each student competitor participated in a sales presentation role-play with sponsors, selling “ADP Easy Pay” payroll services, and life insurance policies from Northwestern Mutual Life. The students had to focus on several areas including making a good first impression with their buyers and selling the benefits of their products. Judges watched via closed-circuit television.
Six schools participated in the competition this year: CSUB, CSU Chico, CSU Fresno, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, CSU Northridge, and CSU Sacramento. CSUB participated for three years in the national competition, but is now excited to be involved in this new event, Pimentel said. He hopes for the West Coast competition to double in size next year.
Sponsors included Pulte Homes/Del Webb Corp., ADP, Liberty Mutual, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, Ferguson Enterprises, Hertz Corp., and Northwestern Mutual Financial Network. The sponsors held a job fair during the day.
