October 14, 2005
CSUB Legends of Jazz concert series presents the "Lounge Art Ensemble”
featuring Grammy winning drummer Peter Erskine, saxophonist Bob Sheppard most recently with Chick Corea’s “Origin,” and bassist Dave Carpenter at the CSUB DorČ Theatre at 8 p.m. on Friday, October 14. Tickets are$18 for general admission and $12 for all students and seniors (60+). For more information call 654-3093.
The Lounge Art Ensemble is dedicated to playing Modern American Music in the horn trio format. Their first album "Lava Jazz" celebrated the spirit of American song and swing in a refreshing set of original compositions that paid homage to beloved jazz standards. As one pundit put it: “It's Cool. It's Hip. It's Hot. It's Lava Jazz." Their latest CD, “Music for Moderns” has just been released by Fuzzy Music. Erskine, the 7- time winner of the Modern Drummer Magazine Readers' Poll as Best Jazz Drummer says about the latest recording, "We are really excited by this new music. With this album, West Coast Jazz has become modern and relevant once more..."
Zan Stewart writes: "Lava Jazz offers another superlative view of the saxophone-bass-drums trio, one of the most exciting and full-of-potential ensembles in modern jazz. Peter Erskine, Bob Sheppard and Dave Carpenter have definitely fulfilled that potential, delivering a series of performances that will enliven the ears of jazz fans, and might, who knows, grab one or two lounge lizards as well. This is a debut. I hope they don't let it stay simply that. These are players worth hearing again and again."
This unique group features three musicians whose performance histories include such legendary figures as Freddie Hubbard, Michael Brecker, Chick Corea, Horace Silver, Herbie Hancock, Weather Report, Elvis Costello, Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell, Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman, and contemporary artists such as Diana Krall, Bill Frisell, John Scofield, Mike Stern, Allan Holdsworth and Yellowjackets. An amazing but only a partial list of artists these musicians have worked with. Their talents can be heard on literally more than a thousand film and album recordings. A full evening with the "Lounge Art Ensemble” will begin at 8 pm in the Dore Theatre at Cal State Bakersfield on Friday, October 14.
Don’t miss these “Legends of Jazz.”
