In recognition of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, California State University, Bakersfield will launch a month long series of events beginning with a special presentation on Oct. 3, at 11 a.m. in the Albertson Room on campus.
The activities are sponsored by CSUB President Horace Mitchell, the Campus Violence Prevention Committee and CSUB’s Hip Hop Club, in conjunction with the Kern County Victim Witness Auxiliary and Alliance Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault.
“I’m really excited that our entire campus has got involved in these activities,” said Janet Millar, CSUB counseling training director. “It clearly tells us that domestic violence doesn’t happen to someone else. It shows us that we’re all impacted.”
Following a proclamation by Mitchell and information session, the community will be invited to participate in The Clothesline Project, which honors the impact of domestic violence. Any person who has been affected by domestic violence is encouraged to participate by designing a t-shirt.
Millar said the shirts will be various colors depicting different forms of domestic violence. They will ultimately be displayed in the Student Union and “form a rainbow.”
In addition, CSUB will be offering impact awareness flags for those who have been touched by domestic violence, by placing a flag in a designated area on campus. Participants may pick up and design their shirts and flags at anytime throughout October in the Student Union.
Millar said purple ribbons will also be tied around trees on campus to help keep up the awareness of domestic violence throughout the month.
