VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR 12th ANNUAL SCIENCE BOWL HOSTED BY CSUB
The California State University, Bakersfield School of Natural Science and Mathematics is seeking volunteers for the 12th annual Kern County Regional Science Bowl. The Science Bowl will be held at CSUB on Saturday, Feb. 14, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The event features 32 five-member teams from Kern County high schools competing in a fast-paced, question-answer quiz format that covers physics, biology, chemistry, math, earth science, computer science and astronomy.
Matches consist of two 10-minute halves. Each match will have four officials: a moderator, who will read the questions, a rules judge, a timekeeper, and a scorekeeper.
The top two teams advance to the finals and compete in a double-elimination round, which will be televised on Channel 15, the educational channel. The Science Bowl winner will advance to the National Science Bowl sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, which is held in Washington, D.C., in May.
Thomas Meyer, CSUB's dean of Natural Science and Mathematics and Science Bowl coordinator, is looking for volunteers to help run the event and for local businesses that are interested in donating prizes for the students.
All officials must attend a training session before the competition where they will be trained for the various positions and given the competition rules. All the volunteers will be provided a T-shirt, morning snack, and lunch.
"The previous events were a great success because of the many campus and community volunteers and supporters," Meyer said. "We sincerely appreciate their help and dedication to make the Science Bowl a marquee event."
Meyer said that all persons, regardless of educational background, are welcome to help.
