The Hispanic Excellence Scholarship Fund (HESF) at California State University, Bakersfield will host its 20th annual awards dinner on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 6 p.m. at the DoubleTree Hotel in Bakersfield.

The HESF was established in 1984 by CSUB President Tomás A. Arciniega to increase access to a college education for academically outstanding, financially needy local students who demonstrate strong leadership potential. In its first year, nine students were awarded scholarships and since then, the program has grown to provide more than $1 million in scholarship funds to more than 650 deserving students.

Thomas Martínez, assistant to the president, said the CSUB scholarship program has been very successful.

"Due to the growing support of local businesses and individuals and a new dollar-for-dollar matching collaboration with the national Hispanic Scholarship Fund, HESF at CSUB has become one of the premier scholarship programs of its kind,” Martinez said. “This year, 105 students will be awarded scholarships totaling $211,000. But more importantly, the hard work and academic excellence of financially needy local students will be recognized."

The HESF Advisory Board is comprised of local business, education, and community leaders. Supporters of this event include Advance Beverage Co., Aera Energy LLC, Bank of America, Bright House Networks, ChevronTexaco, DoubleTree Hotel, Gottschalks, Kaiser Permanente, Pacific Gas and Electric Co., Shell Oil Products U.S., State Farm Insurance Cos., Three-Way Chevrolet, Univision, and VIAD Corp.

The keynote speaker will be Patricia Janiot, anchor of CNN en Español. Tickets for the dinner are $50 each. To purchase tickets or to obtain information about becoming a sponsor, please call 661/664-3052.
