CSU Receives $23.7 Million Mid-Year Budget Cut
(Dec. 18, 2003) -Reacting to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's implementation of mid-year budget cuts announced earlier, CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed said that the CSU would not cut its outreach programs for low-income students, and will instruct the 23 campuses to implement an additional 1 percent cut to this year's student enrollment growth.
The CSU received a $23.7 budget cut today as the Governor used his mid-year budget authority to redirect nearly $150 million in current year spending to provide funds to local governments.
The mid-year budget cut comes on top of a $304 million budget reduction already applied to the CSU's 2003-04 budget.
"The CSU presidents and the campuses have done an extraordinary job during the past year in managing one of the deepest budget cuts the university has ever experienced," said Chancellor Reed. "This additional cut is painful, and will further reduce enrollment growth by 4,000 students."
The cut will reduce CSU's enrollment growth from the 4.3 percent approved in the 2003-04 budget to 3.3 percent. CSU officials have said that the university is not recommending a mid-year student fee increase and that the CSU will continue its commitment to serving enrolled students by providing high-quality, accessible higher education.
