The Hispanic Excellence Scholarship Fund at California State University, Bakersfield will host its 19th annual awards dinner on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 6 p.m. in the DoubleTree Hotel.

The Hispanic Excellence Scholarship Fund was established in 1984 by CSUB President Tomás A. Arciniega. In the first year, nine students were awarded scholarships.  Since then, the program has grown and has provided more than a million dollars in scholarship funds to more than 600 deserving students.

According to Thomas Martínez, assistant to the president, "Due to the growing support of local businesses and individuals and to a new dollar-for-dollar matching collaboration with the national Hispanic Scholarship Fund, HESF at CSUB has become one of the premier scholarship programs of its kind. This year, 99 students will be awarded scholarships totaling $195,000. Most importantly, the hard work and academic excellence of financially needy local students will be recognized."

The Hispanic Excellence Scholarship Fund at CSUB was established to increase access to a college education for academically outstanding, financially needy, local students who demonstrate strong leadership potential. The HESF Advisory Board is comprised of local business, education, and community leaders.  Supporters of this event include The Bakersfield Californian, Aera Energy, ChevronTexaco, Gottschalks, Kaiser Permanente, Pacific Gas and Electric Co., Shell Oil Products US, State Farm Insurance Cos., Time Warner Cable, Univision, and VIAD.

Tickets for the dinner are $50 each. To purchase tickets or to obtain information on becoming a sponsor, please call 661/664-3052.
