Debate team has strong showing
California State University, Bakersfield's debate team had a strong showing at the recent Alan Nichols Invitational debate tourney at the University of Southern California.
CSUB debaters David Wells and Jeremy Peterson defeated the University of South Carolina, the University of Pittsburgh, Liberty University (Lynchburg, Va.), George Mason University (Fairfax, Va.), and Whitman College (Walla Walla, Wash.) to post a 5-3 preliminary record at the Dec. 28-31, 2000, tournament.
In the final round, Peterson and Wells lost a close 2-1 decision to the University of Georgia. David Wells was also named the 18th best speaker at the tournament.
"The USC tournament demonstrated that CSUB debate can compete against - and defeat - the far wealthier and more established programs from the East Coast with a formula of hard work and determination," said Omar Guevara, CSUB forensics director.
CSUB debate will travel next to Salt Lake City for two tournaments: the University of Utah Invitational and the Weber State University Round Robin (Jan. 12-18).
