Road changes at CSUB
Major road changes at California State University, Bakersfield will greet students, faculty and staff when CSUB classes begin Monday, Sept. 17.
During this past summer, the section of the east access road that formerly made a gradual 90-degree turn past the CSUB Student Union was permanently closed and removed. As a result, the south portion of the campus can no longer be accessed via Don Hart Drive East from Stockdale Highway.
Primary access to the south portion of campus is now available from Camino Media across from The Marketplace shopping center. South access is also available via the southwest access road off Camino Media near the baseball diamonds.
For those who need to travel between the north and south portions of the campus, the west perimeter road is open and available. It can be accessed from Don Hart Drive West off of Stockdale Highway.
The road changes were made as a result of continued implementation of the university's master plan, said Mike Neal, CSUB vice president for business and administrative services. "We understand that these changes will cause some confusion initially," Neal said. "We're not closing north-south campus access, just re-routing it."
He added that the changes were in response to the continued growth of the campus. "Our growth in recent years has prompted us to continue to implement the university's master plan," he said. "And as we continue to grow, we'll see even more changes in the years to come."
Brian Baker, CSUB's campus police chief, urged students, faculty and staff to give themselves a few extra minutes to get to campus and find a parking place when fall quarter classes begin Monday, Sept. 17. "We anticipate some congestion the first few days as people get used to the changes," Baker said.
He suggested that to avoid congestion and delays:- Those who routinely park in Lot E, near the Health Center; Lot I, south of the Icardo Center; lots F and G, near the university's administration complex; and Lot H, west of the residence halls, use the south entrances via Camino Media, and avoid Stockdale Highway altogether.
- Those who routinely park in lots A, B, C, and D on the north side of campus should continue to enter campus via Don Hart Drive East and Don Hart Drive West off Stockdale Highway.
- Those who park in lots F, G, and H can also use the west perimeter road, accessible via Don Hart Drive West.
Baker added that more than 80 parking spaces have been added to Lot H during summer construction. Another 87 spaces will become available when the Business Development Center opens. The complex, which began construction last fall, is expected to open in January 2002.
