Runner Bookstore celebrates grand opening
A grand opening celebration for the new Runner Bookstore at California State University, Bakersfield is scheduled Wednesday, May 2, at 11 a.m.
The new bookstore, which was completed in time for the spring quarter, is on the east end of the CSUB Student Union. Construction began in November on the 10,500 square foot structure that replaces the longtime former bookstore adjacent to the CSUB cafeteria.
The new bookstore is bright and spacious, with expanded area for textbooks, and expanded merchandise section where customers can purchase CSUB-logo clothing and other logo items such as pennants and coffee mugs.
The bookstore also features a reading area with sofas and easy chairs and fresh coffee service where students can read or study, while enjoying a cup of coffee.
All in all it's a big change from the cramped 6,000-square-foot former bookstore.
Kelly Swanson, manager of the Runner Bookstore, said she was delighted with the new store. "Isn't this great?" she said while showing off her new surroundings. "Not only do we have much more floor space for the texts and merchandise that are displayed, but also we have a far-better storage space to house our inventory.
"This is a logical extension of the growth the campus has been experiencing," she continued. "We're up to 6,000-plus students here now, and the projections are for even more over the next several years. We had just run out of space in the old bookstore. With the space we have now, we should be able to accommodate the expected growth."
The new bookstore was built for the university by Barnes & Noble College Bookstores, a division of Barnes & Noble. Barnes & Noble College Bookstores manages CSUB's bookstore.
Bakersfield Mayor Harvey Hall will officiate at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m., with the Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce. An open house and lunch will follow at 11:30 p.m. where students, faculty, staff and community members are welcome to tour the new store.
