Guitar virtuoso headlines jazz coffeehouse
Jazz Coffeehouse kicks off a new season Saturday, Oct. 6, with a concert featuring the guitar/bass duo Uwe Kropinski and David Friesen at the California State University, Bakersfield Student Union, 7:30 p.m.
Legendary guitarist Pat Metheny said after hearing Kropinski perform, "I don't think I've ever been so impressed with a solo guitar performance. I was amazed with his musicality, his innovation, and his deep relationship with the instrument."
Guitar Player magazine dubbed Kropinski "the Jimi Hendrix of the acoustic guitar." He combines original artistry with consummate technique. Kropinski was born and lives in Berlin.
Joining him is bass virtuoso Friesen. Winner of the DownBeat Critic's Poll and twice nominated for an Academy Award, Friesen has played with an extraordinary list of jazz greats, including Randy Brecker, Larry Coryell, Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson, Paul Horn, and Clark Terry.
The artists will hold a free jazz master's clinic Saturday at the Student Union Multipurpose Room, 1 to 4 p.m. Musicians, students and professionals alike are invited to bring their instruments and take part.
General admission to the concert is $8 and student admission is $5. For more information, please call the CSUB performing art department at (661) 664-3093.
