Reception Honoring Stephen Neal Scheduled For March 9
A reception honoring world and national wrestling champion Stephen Neal is scheduled Thursday, March 9, at California State University, Bakersfield.
Neal won the 1998 and l999 NCAA heavyweight wrestling championship, and the 1999 World Freestyle Wrestling Championships heavyweight title. He is one of the favorites for the 2000 Olympic Games gold medal. Neal graduated in June 1999 from CSUB with a bachelor's degree in physical education. He is currently working on his master's degree in education from CSUB.
The reception is scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Icardo Room in CSUB's Icardo Center. It is sponsored jointly by the Roadrunner Club and the Coyote Club. The Coyote Club is comprised of wrestling supporters.
The public is invited to the reception to meet Neal and honor his accomplishments. The event is free, and refreshments will be served.
Sharon Taylor, reception coordinator and CSUB's assistant vice president for fiscal and support services, said donation opportunities will be available to help defray Neal's training costs for the 2000 Olympics.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for people in Bakersfield to come and meet this great world and national champion," Taylor said. "The reception is free, but we hope people will want to help Stephen in his quest for an Olympic gold medal. It's not often that someone from your hometown earns a spot on the United States' Olympic team, let alone be among the favorites for the gold medal."
Those planning to attend are asked to please RSVP by March 5 to Sylvia at 661/664-2251.
