Debate Team Reaches Quarterfinals
The success of the California State University, Bakersfield debate team continued this past weekend, as the team reached the quarterfinal round at the 2000 William O. Douglas Invitational Feb. 3-7. Held at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash., the tournament drew colleges and universities from throughout the Northwest, including nationally competitive teams such as Gonzaga University and Whitman College.
Twenty-eight teams battled in the elimination debates for eight quarterfinal slots. CSUB debaters Adam Cosper and William Mord were ranked seventh following the preliminary debates, and lost a heartbreakingly close quarterfinal round to a team from the University of Puget Sound on a 2-1 decision. CSUB's David Wells was ranked the fifth best speaker in the tournament field of nearly 60 debaters.
The CSUB debate team next competes at the Northern California Forensic Association Championships Feb. 10-13 at CSU Chico.
