Trained professionally at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, the Cuban-born Plana has appeared on Broadway in "Zoot Suit" and in "The Boys of Winter," as well as in countless productions both off-Broadway and in regional theatre.

The Hispanic Excellence Scholarship Fund was established at CSUB in 1984 by President Tomás A. Arciniega. In the first year, nine students were awarded scholarships. Since then, the program has provided more than $500,000 in scholarships to more than 500 students.

According to Thomas Martinez, special assistant to the president, "Due to the growing support of local businesses and individuals and to a new collaboration with the national Hispanic Scholarship Fund, HESF at CSUB has continued to grow. This year, 96 students will be awarded scholarships totaling $180,000. Most importantly, at the awards dinner, the hard work and academic excellence of financially needy local students will be recognized."

Tickets for the dinner are $50 each. To make dinner reservations and for more information about the HESF scholarship program, call 661/664-3052.
