CSUB debate team kicks off competitive season

The California State University, Bakersfield debate team opened its competitive 2000-2001 tournament schedule this past weekend at the Las Vegas Round Robin (Sept. 9-12).

CSUB debaters Jeremy Peterson and David Wells were selected as one of the top 12 teams nationally to compete at the tournament. At this, the first national debate tournament of the year, Peterson and Wells debated against some of the top opponents in the country, including Harvard, USC, University of Georgia, and Michigan State.

This coming weekend (Sept. 14-18), the CSUB debate team will compete at the Top of the Rockies Debate Tournament at the University of Wyoming. CSUB forensics director Omar Guevara said the tournament will be a strong indicator of the debate team's prospects and he is optimistic that the squad will become the competitive benchmark for all squads on the West Coast.

The CSUB debate team welcomes returning members of the last year's squad. In addition, three new members have joined the squad: graduate debate assistant Brenda McChesney, graduate sociology student from CSU Chico where she was a top debater; and Sydney Howard and Jason Giffard, graduates of East High School, where both were successful competitors on their high school debate team.

The CSUB debate team is looking forward to another highly successful competitive season, according to Guevara. This year's debate topic asks whether or not the United States should increase development assistance to countries in the Greater Horn of Africa. The team has been researching this topic area since July and will continue its work through the national tournaments the first week of April 2001.
