"An Evening of Chamber Music" planned for May 5

Musica da Camera, California State University, Bakersfield's chamber orchestra, presents "An Evening of Chamber Music" on Friday, May 5, at 8 p.m.

The concert will be at Bakersfield Christian Life Center, and feature pianist James Ramos from Los Angeles, cellist Karen Blockley and violinist Gordon Mehling, who is Musica da Camera's director and a music professor at CSUB.

Attendees will have an opportunity to hear Beethoven's first composition, a piano trio in E flat major. Mehling will speak briefly about the various thematic elements and demonstrate how, even in his first composition, Beethoven showed revolutionary tendencies.

Concluding the program will be the piano trio in E minor by Dimitri Shostakovich. In stark contrast to the Beethoven piece, this work, written in 1945, is highly emotional, full of special effects and not what one would expect from the composer at this time. Again, the trio will demonstrate each movement for increased audience participation.

Advance tickets are available at Russo's Books in the Marketplace Mall; tickets also will be available at the door.
