Community band presents annual concert

The California State University, Bakersfield Community Concert Band will present its annual fall concert and Veteran's Day celebration on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Doré Theater at CSUB.

Special guest soloist will be pianist and CSUB faculty member Charles Badami performing "Rhapsody in Blue" by George Gershwin.

The band will pay special tribute to Vietnam veterans with a march titled "Black Granite," and a special work by David Gillingham titled "Heroes Lost and Fallen."

"The latter was an award winning composition for band in 1995 and has many different and interesting timbres," said Gordon Mehling, CSUB music professor and band director.

Other works on the program include "Africa: Ceremony, Ritual and Song," by Robert W. Smith; "Italians in Algeria," by Rossini; "Music for Winds and Percussion," by Elliot del Borgo; and the music from Final Fantasy 8 as arranged by band member Arnold Morrison.

Advance tickets are available at Russo's Books in the Marketplace Mall and will be sold at the door also. Cost is $7 general admission, $5 for seniors and students; children under 12 admitted free. For more information, please call the Performing Arts Department at 664-3093.
