Associated Students sponsor voter registration at CSUB

A voter registration drive at California State University, Bakersfield is part of a CSU-wide effort to register thousands of new voters.

Sponsored by CSUB's Associated Students, Inc., the drive began Monday, Oct. 2, and concludes Tuesday, Oct. 10, said Dorina Fletcher, a member of the ASI board.

Fletcher said several local politicians are coming to the CSUB campus to help with the drive, including Bakersfield Mayor-elect Harvey Hall, Kern County supervisors Pete Parra and Barbara Patrick, Bakersfield City Councilwoman Pat Demond and Assemblyman Roy Ashburn.

Fletcher said all 23 CSU campuses were involved in the voter registration week. "Our goal is to register 23,000 people," she said.

"This is a project of the California State Student Association," said Roger Eagleton, the external vice chair of the CSSA, an association of all 23 campuses' student governments. "Basically we wanted to show that students are taking an active role in the election process and are involved in their communities," said Eagleton, who is also the director of statewide affairs at CSUB. "Our goal is to register 1,000 people per campus."

Registration tables will be set up at both ends of and inside Dorothy Donahoe Hall on the CSUB campus. Registration materials will also be available in the CSUB Student Union.
