Academic Year 2008-2009
Dear
Potential MasterÕs Program Applicant:
Thank you for requesting information about the Master
of Science in Counseling Psychology (CPSY) program at the California State University,
Bakersfield (CSUB). The CPSY program is designed to meet the academic
requirements established by the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS), Section
4980.37, 4980.38, 4980.40. and 4980.41 (subdivisions a-g) of the Business and
Professions Code, for the California license in Marriage and Family Therapy
(MFT).
Please
note that application is a two-track process:
1.
You must apply to the University for graduate admission. Regulations require that
before enrollment at CSUB (to take prerequisites or graduate courses) you gain
admission to the university as a Post-Baccalaureate student. There is a
standard application form used by all of the California State University
campuses at http://www.csumentor.com .
(For more information call the CSUB Admissions Office 661-654-3036) A limited
number of graduate course units may be taken before admission to a specific
program, but this does not assure admission to our program.
2. You must separately
apply for admission to the CPSY program (use this packet, available at http://www.csub.edu/cpsy). This application
is to be filed with Ms. Barbara Espinosa, c/o the Psychology Dept. (DDH D107;
661-654-2363) and reviewed by CPSY faculty. Be sure to send the CPSY
application to Ms. Espinosa. An offer of admission by the university as a
post-baccalaureate does not imply admission to our program. Send the Counseling
Psychology application materials (including letters of recommendations) as a complete packet directly to the
address listed at the end of the application.
From
the Admissions office you can find out more about tuition and fees http://www.csub.edu/admissions/registration/.
For out-of-state and international students there is a fee differential. The
Office of Financial Aid will provide information and application materials for
financial assistance http://www.csub.edu/FinAid/
.
Please
be sure to send the three types of applications, (1) university, (2) financial
aid, and (3) CPSY program, to their respective offices (e.g., if you mistakenly
send everything to the CSUB Admissions Office you risk delay or loss of
materials).
To
increase the likelihood of a timely review of your application please carefully
follow instructions. We will not review incomplete applications. We also will
not look at applications that do not include official academic transcripts;
photocopies are not acceptable. We will read carefully your application, and give
significant weight to your personal statement and letters of
recommendation. Please ask your referees to address the specific points stated
on the recommendation form; generic letters are not informative. All
correspondence will be conducted via e-mail.
Note:
Courses in this program are scheduled to accommodate individuals who work
daytime Monday through Friday. However, during the last two quarters of the program
CPSY 691 & 692 (Traineeship I & II) require student availability for
agency placement up to twenty hours per week Monday through Friday between 8
A.M. and 5 P.M. Traineeship placements are often unpaid.
Please
also note that while admission to the CPSY program in a quarter other than fall
is offered, many courses are sequential and taught only on an annual basis. You
cannot take any CPSY graduate course for which you do not meet particular
prerequisites. The application deadlines for
Winter quarter (begins
early January) is October
15
Spring quarter (begins end
of March) is February
15
Fall quarter (begins early
September) is April 15
We
will notify you of faculty decisions about one month after a deadline. All
correspondence will be by e-mail. Again, thank you for your interest in our graduate
program. The goals of our program are to offer a balance of theory and
practice, of science and art, and of personal and professional development. If
you have questions or need assistance, please feel free to contact me
(661-654-2375; kishida@csub.edu) or the Assistant Program Coordinator, Dr.
Kathy Ritter (661-654-3062; kritter@csub.edu).
Sincerely,
T. Ken Ishida, Ph.D.
