Service-Learning (CSL) is a community service program
supported by CSUB and our local community. Students
desiring to volunteer in the community provide valuable
services to various non-profit and public organizations
throughout Kern County. Placements are designed to
complement course objectives. Students have the opportunity
to make a difference in the lives of others as well as
experience interactions with individuals
from different ages, various ethnic backgrounds, and/or
disabilities. Community Service-Learning at CSUB combines
community service with explicit academic learning
objectives, preparation, and reflection. Students
participating in CSL are expected to provide direct
community service as part of academic courses and to
understand the connection between the service and their
academic coursework. Service Learning currently operates
from within the Center for Community Partnerships and
Service Learning at CSUB, which also includes undergraduate
internships and Human Corps programs.
For students
interested in volunteering within the community or on campus
who wish to receive graded academic credit, the
Service-Learning courses and the General Studies 207 A, B,
and C, are great ways to do so. Each course requires a
specified number of service hours to be completed during the
quarter in which the courses are taken, as well as other
assignments and requirements. If you are interested in
finding out more about these courses, please click on the
link below for the course syllabi or come by the CPSL
Office.
