Important Information for Students

Students are eligible for commencement by having an approved graduation application on file with the Admissions and Records Office.

Students who finish their degree required courses by the SUMMER 2018, FALL 2018SPRING 2019 or SUMMER 2019 terms are eligible to participate in the 2019 ceremonies.

Eligible students will receive commencement registration information via their CSUB email

There are no exceptions or appeals for participating in 2019 commencement for fall 2019 or later graduates. If a student changes their grad check application to fall 2019 or later, the student will be removed from the eligibility list and notified by the commencement staff by email that they are not eligible to participate for 2019 commencement.

The commencement staff will receive the last list of eligible graduates' names on April 29, 2019. All eligible gradutes' names will be printed in the commencement program including graduates who don't participate in commencement.

Students who do not meet the April 29, 2019 deadline, will not be included in the commencement program.

Commencement Registration

Commencement registration for summer 2018 and fall 2018 graduates will begin in November 2018.

Commencement registration for spring 2019 and summer 2019 graduates will begin in January 2019.

All eligible graduates will receive an email requesting they register for commencement to their CSUB email. Commencement registration ends April 29, 2019

All students that meet the commencement registration deadline of April 29, 2019 will have a printed name card which will be scanned to show their name and degree on the video screens at the ceremony.

Prohibited Items

In an effort to make commencement a pleasant experience for all guests and participants, the following items are prohibited at commencement:

  • No purses, backpacks, or totes - Only clear (see-thru) bags will be permitted into the venue.
  • Signs
  • Umbrellas
  • Air horns
  • Camera tripods
  • Selfie Sticks
  • Balloons
  • Beach balls
  • Outside food
  • Bottles and cans
  • Alcohol
  • Fireworks
  • Strollers
  • Firearms/Weapons

Violation of these rules will result in removal from the venue.


Honors are awarded to undergraduate students who have completed at least 60 letter-graded units of resident credit at CSUB as part of their baccalaureate program.

Students may check myCSUB for their GPA for honors status. The Commencement Office staff does not have information regarding a student's GPA.

Honors students' names in the commencement program are based on the student’s Overall GPA and CSUB GPA at the end of the 2018 fall semester.

Honors students must be eligible to participate in commencement by April 29, 2019 to be acknowledged as an honors student in the commencement program.

The grade point average (GPA) necessary for graduation with honors at the end of the 2018 fall semester are as follows:

summa cum laude
3.9 to 4.0 GPA

magna cum laude
3.6 to 3.89 GPA

cum laude
3.3 to 3.59 GPA
