CSUB Children’s Art Institute Launches its’ First Summer Art Classes on Campus

The CSUB Children’s Art Institute launched its first summer art classes for children in upcoming grades 1-6. The Institute hosted 34 students who participated in Level I or Level II art studio classes in drawing, painting, and “mostly mud.” The Institute took place on the CSUB main campus utilizing CSUB’s art facilities that include the drawing, painting, and ceramics studios. Children enjoyed studying the works of renowned contemporary and old master artists under the direction of the Institute’s 2006 artist-in-residence, Margaret Nowling. The culminating art exhibition, organized by the CSUB pre-service student teachers, took place at the Todd Madigan Art Gallery August 10, 2006. Families of the Summer Institute’s program were treated to an exhibition of the children’s artwork from the classes that they took. Final Institute activities included a viewing of the children’s artwork on exhibit, a reception given in their honor, receipt of a culminating portfolio, and invitation to return to the Institute next summer. Half of the children who participated in this Summer’s Children’s Art Institute indicated that they would like to become a famous artist as a result of their participation.

CSUB Children’s Art Institute was established in 2006 to provide cultural enrichment to members of greater Kern County and honor the memory of Jane W. Turner. The School of Humanities and Social Science provides the teachers as part of the Art 302 curriculum. Director of the program is Dr. Dianne Turner of the School of Education, and Curriculum Coordinator is Margaret Nowling of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Other grant support and private donations are being sought to expand the program.
