General Chemistry

To better align with the 2015 American Chemical Society (ACS) Guidelines for Bachelor’s Degree Programs, our program has revised its curriculum significantly. Instead of the traditional full year of general chemistry, our students take a one semester CHEM 1000 (Foundations of Chemistry) class which allows them entry into many other foundations-level classes.

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry considers CHEM 1000 (Foundations of Chemistry), CHEM 1001 (Foundations of Chemistry Laboratory), CHEM 1100 (Foundations of Analytical Chemistry), and CHEM 1600 (Foundations of Physical Chemistry) to be equivalent to the content of a full year of general chemistry. Note that while CHEM 1001 is only one semester, the lab meets twice a week and thus covers all of the content typically covered in one year of general chemistry.
