Alternate Roadmaps.

The following roadmaps are provided for those who are not ideally prepared. Ideally prepared freshmen are placed into Math 201 (Calculus I) and English 110. Ideally prepared transfer students have taken a year of General Chemistry, three terms of calculus, and a year of Physics.

Those who are not ideally prepared may need to take an additional year to graduate. This gives you a more relaxed schedule because you can spread your science courses out over five years. Note that general education courses tend to be taught every quarter with few sequencing requirements whereas science and math courses tend to be sequenced and most are offered only once a year (some, every other year). There are three year-long chemistry sequences; General Chemistry (211/212/213), Organic Chemistry (331/332/333), and Physical Chemistry (351/352/353). Chemistry requires a grade of C- or higher to progress along the sequence and a grade of C- or higher for each chemistry prerequisite. A common pitfall that hinders a timely completion of the degree is the inability to register for General Chem I (211), Physics I (202 or 212), or Organic Chem. I (331) in the fall quarter. Although a "trailer" series is sometimes offered--beginning in the winter quarter--registering for the final course of the sequence often creates scheduling conflicts.

Those transferring from community colleges can graduate in three years if they have the following requirements satisfied:
1 yr. Chemistry* and All Lower Division General Education.
Please make sure that these courses transfer to CSUB and are recognized as their CSUB equivalents on your transcript.

* Must be acceptable for the major (e.g., Chem 1A and 1B).

Two-Year Roadmap to Graduation with a BS in Chemistry
for Community College Transfers with No Physics (or No Calculus)

Quarter

Year

F W S
CC

Those transferring from community colleges with no Physics have the following choices:

[This same schedule can be used for those lacking Calc I, II, and/or III by substituting these courses for Physics.]

  • Register for a high-unit "overload" two quarters (Suggestion: senior year)
  • Take General Education courses during the summer to avoid overloads.
  • Forego an ACS-certified degree by taking only one or two 400-level Chemistry courses
  • Spread the coursework out over 3 years (see above)

This assumes that the following pre-requisites have been satisified:
1 yr. Chemistry*, 3 terms Calculus* and All Lower Division General Education.
Please make sure that these courses transfer to CSUB and are recognized as their CSUB equivalents on your transcript.

* Must be acceptable for the major (e.g., Chem 1A and 1B).
