Duties: Answer phones, take messages, and direct calls, greet and direct visitors, open and distribute mail, file, type on electronic typewriter or computer. Run campus errands. Fax, copy, data entry, schedule appointments.

Qualifications: Typing 25 wpm, familiarity with MS Word and Excel, some office experience (or will train), proper phone etiquette, Internet, Computer skills required.

Pay rate: Usually starts at minimum wage and can increase for students with on-campus experience. Must have exceptional circumstance to pay higher.

Duties: Various duties such as: set up tables and chairs for events, inventory campus equipment and furniture, check out equipment to students or staff, sort and deliver mail to campus offices, build and take down sets for theatre events, maintain supplies in bathrooms and clean spills.

Qualifications: Ability to lift up to 20 pounds repeatedly, accuracy and diligence required.

Pay rate: Usually starts at minimum wage and may increase for students with on-campus experience. Must have exceptional circumstance to pay higher.

Research Assistant
Specialized Data Entry (requires specific knowledge of subject)
Data Collection Assistant
Survey Assistant

Duties: Data entry and analyses, library research, literature reviews, writing draft results and introduction sections of research documents. Research design. May assist in developing survey and data collection instruments. Data collection.

Qualifications: Appropriate research methods coursework, SPSS and/or SAS knowledge and experience, excellent library research and writing skills, proficiency in Excel and Word, good proofreading skills, strong knowledge of research design and execution. Ability to work independently.

Pay rate: Usually begins at Class II, may go higher with advanced duties.

Classification: Class II or III

Teaching Assistant ** (See below for ISA description)
Course Assistant
Grader I

Duties: Record grades, grades multiple choice exams and short answer quizzes, tutor students one hour a week, lead group study sessions, track attendance and/or course preparation.

Qualifications: Passed class with at least a "B."

Pay rate: Starts at minimum. Unusual to pay more than top of Class I range for experienced students.

Classification: Class I

Grader II
Lab Assistant

Duties: Assists instructor in grading term papers and exams requiring subjective and independent judgment. Math exams that require advanced math knowledge. Grading lab assignments. May include tutoring, small teaching assignments (single day teaching, lead discussions in class, supervise lab, etc.). Records grades, Web CT postings. (Must be less than 50% Grading, Tutoring or teaching-see ISA description below.)

Qualifications: Several classes in the major, excellent grades and communication skills, perhaps interest in teaching at the college level, Web CT experience, Graduate student in major.

Pay rate: Starts at higher end of Class I. Unusual to pay more than top of Class II. (See ISA pay rates.)

Outreach Assistant
AAC Peer
STAAR Tutors

Duties: Tutor a general subject, lead study sessions, may do some grading. (Must be less than 50% time spent in Grading, Tutoring or Teaching-See ISA description below.)

Qualifications: At least a "B" in subject.

Pay rate: Starts at top of Class I.

Classification: Class I or II

Specialized Tutors (may be ISA-see below)
Target Tutor (usually ISA-see below)
America Reads Tutor (NOT ISA)
America Counts Tutor (NOT ISA)

Duties: Tutor a specific subject with a specific teacher, tutors a special type of student (K-12, special needs, grant funded), tutors special subject within a demanding program (nursing, higher math, etc.).

Qualifications: Major in subject, high level of competency in subject.

Pay rate: Starts at top of Class I or higher. (See pay rates for ISA)

Classification: Class I or II (in special cases) or ISA

Duties: Troubleshoots computers and programs, determines and produces corrective action, Builds web pages for a specific project, department or faculty/staff member.

Qualifications: Major in subject, high level of competency in subject.

Pay rate: Starts at midrange Class I.

Classification: Class I or II

ISAs are not regular student assistants, they are represented by a union and appointment must be made through Provost's Office. Pay rates are determined by Provost.
