President's Welcome

I'm very pleased to welcome you to this official introduction to CSU Bakersfield, its academic programs, and its campus community. The catalogue contains essential information for applicants, new students, and continuing students. This 2016-18 catalogue is significantly different from past CSUB catalogues in that it reflects a change in the University's academic calendar from quarters to semesters. In addition to conversion of individual courses from a quarter format to a semester format, more than 70% of our academic programs have completed curriculum transformations based on what students will need to know and be able to do in their majors in the future. The faculty also has reformed our general education program to be in alignment with a set of University-wide student learning outcomes.

Our outstanding faculty are scholars and educators who are dedicated to actively engaging our students in the classroom and laboratory and in research and other creative activities that stimulate, challenge, and support their intellectual growth and development. The University is committed to assuring that our diverse student body experiences co-curricular programs and services, like our award-winning University Honors Program and other specialized opportunities on campus, which advance their academic achievement and facilitate their personal development within the context of a vibrant campus life.

In my annual New Student Convocation address each Fall, I have used the theme "You and CSUB: A Partnership for Your Success." This theme best exemplifies our expectations for student learning, success, and graduation and how the University will support you all the way. Your university experience at CSU Bakersfield will be transformative: it will change your life. You will gain new academic knowledge, abilities, and skills and expand your intellectual understanding of the multiple world views that intersect in our global society. You will better understand the basis on which other people have developed different values, even as you refine your own. A college degree will put you in a better position to take advantage of future opportunities, to improve your family's quality of life, and to contribute to your community.

Our students are also major partners in the University's commitment to community engagement. They provide thousands of hours of volunteer service to schools, nonprofit organizations, and civic groups. Such service-learning activities complement the intellectual and personal development of all our students involved in these programs. CSU Bakersfield graduates are leaders in diverse sectors of our society – in K-12 schools and higher education, in health care and other professions, in all levels of government, in non-profit organizations, in small businesses, and in corporate executive offices, to name only a few. In addition, our alumni network continues to grow locally, nationally, and globally.

We take great pride in the University's rich history and its accomplishments in serving our students and community as one of the major educational and cultural resources of this region, which also greatly enhances its quality of life, and supports its economic development. Working together, we are defining and creating a dynamic future through our "partnerships for excellence."

You can learn more about our traditions of academic, cultural, and social achievement and our commitment to student success by visiting us at If you are an applicant about to make a decision concerning which college to attend, I hope you will be inspired to choose CSU Bakersfield. If you do, you will soon learn why we say, "CSUB is your University."
